Glasses Gang

So here I find myself at the ripe old age of 24 and finally I have glasses. I’ve noticed over the past few years that my long distance sight has gotten worse and to be honest, I’ve been reluctant to admit it. Consequently, I came to accept my poor vision and was in denial that I did in fact need some specs.

Edit 1Following an eye test to get my prescription, I went about trying on the different frames. With my heart shaped face and square jaw line, the assistant advised on the types of designs that would work for me. I wanted a frame that was subtle yet stylish, so I opted for a thin gold pilot style actually meant for men.

Edit 2It’s taking a bit of getting accustomed to wearing them, but what a world of difference they make to my vision; watching TV from the sofa, walking to work and looking out over the harbour, it’s like seeing everything in HD. I can proudly say I am now part of the four eyes glasses gang and unashamed to be so 🙂

Nostalgia: One Year On

According to the English Dictionary, Nostalgia is ‘a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place, time or people’. I certainly do enjoy looking back on years gone by with fond memories and embracing the feeling of past experiences which have shaped the person I am today.

Edit 1 2To think that this time last year I packed my suitcase and ventured down to the Southern Highlands to embark on my farm work, I still can’t believe my luck to have ended up in such a place much like my home back in England. That quaint little town of Moss Vale became my home for 4 months, during which I established some of my closest friends who I continue to catch up with on my visits back to the Aussie countryside.

Edit 2.jpgNow I find myself back in Sydney making the most of working city life and soon to move into a different role for another 6 months of my visa. I’m unsure where this next chapter will take me, but I hope to make the most of this year and continue making many beautiful memories with all the wonderful people I meet along my journey.

Nourishing Body, Mind & Soul

As the days get shorter and evenings close in earlier, there’s nothing better than having a weekend of snuggling up indoors and enjoying some Netflix, whilst sipping a few red wines of course. My favourite pastime, particularly during winter, is to get in the kitchen and cook good food which is both hearty and nutritious. Being back in the Southern Highlands this weekend, the weather was even colder than Sydney, so me and my boyfriend decided to have a few days of complete relaxation and self-indulgence.

Edit 1Friday night I was treated to the best homemade beef burgers with all the extras including cheese, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, gherkin and chilli relish, just what I needed after a long day at work and two hour train journey out of the city. To top it all off, he also found my favourite Malbec red wine with a logo of a Flamingo wearing ballet shoes – it’s like it was made for me! We watched The Graham Norton Show whilst devouring our burgers, making for the perfect Friday night setup.

Edit 2#BurgerPorn

Saturday evening it was time to rustle up his catch from the previous day fishing. We cooked the beautiful Bream fish by simply baking it in the oven with olive oil and lemon juice. It doesn’t get more organic than catching your own dinner!

Edit 4With such exquisite fish I decided to keep the side dishes super simple; herby buttered new potatoes, steamed green beans, rocket beetroot salad topped with pepitas and a garlic mayo relish mixed with diced gherkins. It was a feast of fresh delights which was as delicious as it was nutritious. Following our meal, we sat back with our Merlot wines and watched a good movie on Netflix, Lost Paradise.

Edit 6As Sunday rolled around far too quickly, we wanted to meal prep some snacks for the week. Together we made savoury spiced pumpkin feta muffins and peanut butter chocolate date balls which were made of a few basic ingredients; medjool dates, oats, desiccated coconut, peanuts, smooth pb, honey and I swapped the raw cacao for Milo powder, what a game changer! These sweet bites taste so naughty and could easily compete with a chocolate truffle on taste, yet have nothing but natural goodness in them. Enjoy as a healthy snack or crumble over yoghurt or even desert.

Edit 8It certainly was a weekend of fabulous food and of course perfect wine to match. I have to remind myself that it’s important taking time out sometimes to completely switch off, give my busy mind a rest and indulge in the simple pleasures which nourish my body as well as feed the soul.

Palace Cinema Broadway: Rocket Man Viewing

Another month and another team social with work last week. With our own private theatre viewing of the highly anticipated Rocket Man, we had a blast watching the inspiring, glitzy film whilst enjoying our drinks to celebrate another hard working month in the office.

Pic03920.jpgOn a rainy Tuesday evening in Sydney, we made our way over to Palace Cinemas in Broadway to share some pre-show drinks and nibbles. We were treated to mezze platters of cheese to accompany a comforting glass of red wine. Following a good catchup and chitchat with colleagues, we made our way into the theatre to take our seats for the film. Of course we went via the bar to line up drinks and order in snacks for the movie and there I was double parked on a Tuesday!

Pic03918.jpgDespite the cheesy outbursts of song, I thought the movie was fabulous with a raw edge which made for a more real portrayal of Elton John’s life. Having our own private theatre prompted us to act like children as we had a laugh throwing popcorn at each other, not so accepted when in a public cinema. The evening continued on at another bar in Broadway and I found myself one too many red wines down for a Tuesday night – thankfully there were others on my page and up for a few drinks too!

Countryside Chills in the Southern Highlands

There’s nothing like getting out of the city for a weekend and breathing in that fresh country air. Last Friday I escaped back to the Southern Highlands for a few days to catch up with some friends in the quaint little town of Moss Vale which I called home for 4 months. Pic00002I’m always spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a trendy little coffee shop as the area is home to some fantastic spots to kick back and enjoy a cup of Joe. After strolling the shops and boutiques of Bowral, we soaked up the afternoon sun whilst sipping our coffees at Grand Bistro, another highly rated restaurant I’ve been keen to visit.

Edit 2.jpgWith winter closing in and that brisk chill in the air, we got the fire pit roaring in the garden and saw down the sun with a few drinks and some good old Australian yarns! Later on we ventured to the local pub in town where the drinks are cheap and you’re never far from a familiar face. It was great being back in the countryside leaving all the madness of city life behind me and just enjoying time spent with friends… ‘A good laugh and a long sleep are the best two cures for anything.’

Anzac Day Straya

In tribute of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during WW1, Anzac Day is one of the country’s most significant anniversaries. On April 25th every year, Australia marks this anniversary with a bank holiday on which those who fought for the country past and present are remembered. Following the dawn services, pubs open their doors early and host the traditional coin flipping game of ‘Two Up’. This draws in swarms of punters and results in bars across the country overflowing onto streets and achieving their best turnover for the year. As I was working in one of the Sydney pubs myself on last year’s Anzac Day, I was keen to experience the day from the other side of the bar and soak up the Aussie festivities. It was great fun bar hopping around Kiribilli with friends and later I joined my family in Paddington for a good old Aussie BBQ! With the sun shining and Sydney in great spirits, it was a truly great Anzac Day celebrated with friends and family.

That Market Place at Lindfield

With Easter weekend upon us and the markets across Sydney popping up everywhere to lap up the bank holiday trade, I joined my co-worker to help sell her handmade candles at the Lindfield markets.

Edit 4Arriving at the crack of dawn on this sunny Easter Sunday, we got to work setting up and playing around with different layouts to display the candles best. Her collection of scented candles are exquisite with a range of aromas from sweet and fruity to the more floral and woody.

Edit 1Also in the collection are the three Dosha candles inspired by the Ayurveda energy theory. This Sanskrit teaching is derived from the belief that there are three primary energy patterns in our body; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These energies move about the whole body producing good or ill effects according to their normal or aggravated states. Once you understand your own Dosha you can keep your energies in balance by burning the required candle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs it was her first time selling at the markets, she was pleased to have a helping hand and company throughout the day. Being Easter Sunday we even laid out buckets of mini chocolate eggs and a jar of marshmallows to attract customers.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOn the whole it was a successful first go at the markets and we already have more booked in the diary which I am keen to be on board with. My friend was so thrilled to have my support and gifted me my favourite scented candle ‘citrus zest and coconut’ as a thank you. It was an honour to be there for such a talented co-worker who is not only a great friend and makes me chuckle, but inspiring mentor who is full of wisdom.

Royal Randwick Derby Day

Working in PR and events, team socials and parties are a weekly occurrence. As part of our company’s ‘Team Fun’ (the name explains itself) I was involved in planning and organising a day at the races for our agency. Choosing to attend on the special Derby Day at The Royal Randwick Racecourse, the theme was black and white. My outfit of choice was very simple as I wore a black ruche middy dress, white mules and a big floppy fedora hat to complete the look, echoing slight Stevie Nicks gypsy vibes.

Edit 2The first race was at 12:15, so we all got to the racecourse by midday to grab a spot by the track whilst still in prime location near to the bar! It was a swelteringly hot day, so between a few glasses of bubbles I sipped on diet soda all afternoon to stay hydrated.

Edit 4.jpgUnlike the typical races back home in the UK, I was surprised to see that the dress code and general atmosphere here in Australia is a lot more informal. With benches laid out on the grass and food vans selling mostly hot chips and burgers, it was certainly a far cry from the fine dining options and lavish outfits of Royal Ascot. Nevertheless, everyone from our company made an effort and got spruced up for the occasion, especially all the gals!

Edit 11It was fascinating watching the horses which are so incredibly fit with their veins protruding from their muscles following the race. Now I can truly appreciate the power and skill of these highly trained, magnificent creatures.

Edit 8.jpgIt was a glorious day getting to mingle with my work colleagues as we basked in the sunshine all afternoon cheering on the horses as we placed our bets. I love any excuse to get dolled up and it was lovely to see everyone enjoying some down time away from the office.

Firelight Skies & Hard Goodbyes

Edit 2And so the sunsets over my sister’s memorable visit to me here in Oz. Her time went far too quickly but we certainly packed a lot in; from exploring the best Sydney has to offer for arvo drinks with the most iconic views, to visiting the Southern Highlands and giving her a taste of the country bumpkin life I lived for four months.

Edit 1I can’t thank her enough for making these two weeks together so special and I hope she enjoyed every minute of the short time she had. I’m so lucky to have such a kind-hearted, funny, beautiful sister who cares so much for me and is so proud of how much I have achieved on my journey. The breathtaking red twilight sky over Sydney made for a fitting backdrop as we said our goodbyes. On my return from seeing her off to the airport, I wondered down to Lavender Bay harbour to soak up the stunning pastel hues and humming atmosphere of the city around me…what a time sis ❤

Twilight Tingles & Rose Feels

With my sister in town for a couple of weeks, we kicked celebrations off in true style with post work drinks at some of my favourite spots in Sydney. Starting in Barangaroo at Bungalow 8, we got going English fashion with a jug of Pimms!

Edit 16.jpgHeading down to The Rocks, we passed via the Luna Markets where the back streets were decorated with hundreds of beautiful Chinese lanterns.

Edit 1Edit 4As the sun was setting and a picturesque pink hue was settling over the harbour, we stopped by The Glenmore rooftop. I couldn’t think of a more fitting spot to enjoy a glass of rose with an out of towner than overlooking the harbour bridge and opera house set against the stunning Sydney skyline.

Edit 7Edit 5A few cocktails and vinos down and we were ready for some dinner! After showing my sister my new pad in Lavender Bay, we popped around the corner to a fantastic Spanish tapas bar called Delicado Foods. With wine served in suitably large glasses and an extensive menu of authentic tapas, this local favourite on a modest corner of Blues Point Road felt like we were in the middle of Europe.

Edit 48.jpgWe ordered a spread of potatas braves, halloumi mushrooms, spicy chorizo and salad before treating ourselves to desert of churros and Affogato Amaretto (naughty but necessary). A truly memorable evening spent with my sis showing her the sweet Sydney life as we soaked up those twilight tingles sipping our rose.
