Heckfield Place; Hampshire’s Hidden Gem

Nestled amongst the peaceful Hampshire countryside, this newly renovated Georgian family home has been transformed into one of South England’s most exclusive estates. Having won The Sunday Times Hotel Of The Year 2018 and secured a place the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List 2019 amongst other esteemed awards, Heckfield Place certainly has set the bar already just a year or so after its opening.

Edit 1.jpg

Whilst it has taken almost 10 years to complete this project, the Hong-Kong real estate tycoon Gerald Chan has perfected this magical retreat to offer the highest level of luxury, redefining the idea of a hotel.

Edit 4.jpgTaking inspiration from its classic 18th century origins woven into the 400 acre surrounding English landscape, their ethos focuses on reconnecting with the land. From the walled gardens and orchard where chef Skye Gyngell sources produce, to the lake where guests may take a dip, everything is drawn from nature to rediscover our connection to the ancient land.

Edit 8.jpgAs a local and living just down the road from this elusive, highly acclaimed hotel, I was keen to visit this wonderland for myself. The Assembly at Heckfield place offers a diverse  programme of events cultivating the space and all it has to offer.

Pic00008.jpgWith so many experiences open to guests and visitors alike there is something for everyone; whether its taking a walking woodland tour and foraging for mushrooms, putting your hand to professional cocktail making, or getting active with Bodyism’s B Free Yoga class.

Edit 2.jpg I was particularly intrigued by the sound of the plush cinema room screening classic films as well as new releases. So being my Dad’s Birthday a few weeks back, I brought him, my mum and I tickets to go and see the new Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Tarantino film. Arriving one September Sunday afternoon, looming grey skies set a moody atmosphere in contrast to the colourful autumnal leaves lining the grand driveway of Heckfield Place.

Pic00001.jpgUpon entering the main house, we were greeted by the front of house staff who were happy to give us a tour of the different communal areas, before we settled down in the bar for a drink. The eclectic interiors tastefully combine elements of original Georgian heritage, alongside modern features to achieve a stylish yet homely feel.

Edit 5.jpgPrior to our cinema viewing, we took a seat in the Trestle Bar lounge where we enjoyed a glass of G&T as we browsed the interesting coffee table books and admired our exquisite surroundings. Our hostess also informed us that most of the artwork and furniture is from the owner’s personal collection.

Edit 6

I certainly felt right at home and will be keen to spend more time perusing the books and studying the artwork on my next visit.

Edit 10.jpgSoon it was time to take our seats for the film, taking a trip via the theatre bar first of course. With a selection of drinks and homemade sweet treats on offer, you can enjoy your favourite glass of wine or cocktail whilst watching the film.

Edit 12.jpgThe intimate theatre room with its plush leather seating and personal side tables, makes for a truly special cinema experience. At only £15 per ticket, I was astounded by the luxury of this spectacular theatre room open to the public. As we sipped our G&T’s watching Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, I felt like I was on our very own set for an English period drama.

Edit 13.jpgOverall, it was fabulous to explore Heckfield Place for ourselves and as a local from just down the road, I will be coming back to experience more of their exciting events. I will also be keen to book into the Marle restaurant and sample their set lunch menu or even pop in for breakfast following a yoga class…I do feel rather smug to have this fabulous estate right on my doorstep!

Coast . Surf + Moto Cafe

As a self-confessed coffee snob and sucker for a trendy spot to sit and watch the world go by, I’m always on the lookout for the best cafes around. So when my friend gave me a call last Sunday to go on a spontaneous trip down south to checkout this cafe which combines delicious food alongside a range of skate, surf and motorcycle merchandise from around the world, I was keen to see if it lived up to expectation.

Edit 1Having gone to uni in Bournemouth, my friend used to visit Coast.Surf+Moto frequently and knew I’d love the stylish, quirky vibe of the place. Bringing together a fresh, wholesome all-day brunch menu as well as serving quality coffee, this cafe promotes a healthy living outdoor lifestyle.

Edit 3The simple, sleek interiors featuring black window panels and bamboo lampshades, reflects coastal living with touches of Scandinavian character.

Edit 2Located in Poole near to the South’s most popular beaches and harbours, their shop sells an eclectic mix of surf, skate and motorcycle products. After our leisurely lunch under the afternoon sun out in the courtyard, I enjoyed browsing the branded clothes and accessories before having a read of some of the contemporary books on offer.

Edit 8Following our chilled afternoon at Coast.Surf+Moto cafe and shop, we made our way down to the beach to soak up the rest of the day’s sun…an essence of Aussie living in the UK!

Ciao for now Italia

‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened’ – sometimes easier said than done as we bid farewell to the charming residence of Terre Di Nano where the wedding of dreams came true.

Edit 2With family who travelled from every side of the world to be there, it was never going to be an easy goodbye. Whilst it’s difficult having family all over the world, this occasion was a testament to how close we all remain despite the distance and when we do see each other, its like no time has passed.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATaking a final look over that landscape, once again I couldn’t comprehend the overwhelming joy and fun we’d shared together that weekend. When there’s so much uncertainty and hatred going on in the world at the moment, I feel so incredibly lucky to have such a solid family who always have each others backs no matter what.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHaving lived in Aus for the past few years, being back with family was even more special. It was also a great opportunity to get to know the bride’s lovely family too, as well as catch up with my brother’s oldest friends who I haven’t seen for many years.

Edit 5The week before with my immediate family in Montepulciano staying at that beautiful villa was also a special time. We spent our days lounging by the pool, soaking up the sun and sampling the best of the local wine and food in the heart of Tuscan countryside. My sister, cousin and I have already agreed we want to return next year to explore more of the region and its historic towns nestled in the picturesque hills.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABefore leaving we visited Pienza once again so my dad could see the spot where the Gladiator film was shot. We had a laugh as he performed the famous Maximus speech which he has learnt off-by-heart! We then hit the road and headed for Rome airport to catch our flight back to England.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGetting back to reality has been a struggle following such a euphoric week full of highs. Whilst I will cherish this as one of the best times of my life, I guess it’s important to remember more good times are coming and to feel blessed for having made such enchanting memories with loved ones.

Edit 8Bellissimo! Ciao for now Tuscany, you will forever hold a special place in our hearts ❤

Post Wedding Pizza Pool Party

Onto the third and final day of wedding celebrations and everyone was back at Terre Di Nano for a pool party. Following all the emotions and excitement of the wedding day, everyone was still on such a high and by the afternoon we were sipping beers and bubbles yet again.

Edit 1With the sun shining and speakers pumping tunes, it was another afternoon of fun and laughter as we all reminisced on the fairytale weekend we’d spent together.

Edit 2It was the perfect opportunity to wear my Lack Of Colours rancher hat and tye-dye maxi beach dress with Birkenstocks and Ray Ban sunnies.

Pic00002.jpgAfter a couple of hours down by the pool messing around on pizza floaties, we made our way back to the terrace where they served up real pizzas. Made in the authentic wood-fire pizza oven, these were without a doubt the best pizza slices I’d ever had. A light thin base with emphasis on the toppings was what made these so moorish and the perfect cure for those hangovers 😉

Edit 4Meanwhile a storm was brewing in the distance making for a very moody sky across the valley, yet the rain never came; a terrific Tuscan stormy sunset.

Edit 7Later that evening the guitar came out and we broke into a singalong. We were even treated to a live version of the song written for the newlyweds which had us all in tears yet again!

Edit 8Being a very musical family, that night we were in our element singing our hearts out to each other. I sang ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac, although I was a fair few beers down at that point, so I’m not so sure this was my most tuneful rendition. Singing ‘Let it be’ by Lennon with my brother and dad was particularly special, before we had to bid farewell to the guests and close the book on a wedding weekend we will cherish forever.

Edit00105.jpgI took a step back that night and breathed in the magic of that moment. We truly had shared the most joyful time together and the happiness of everyone present spoke for itself.  The memories will always make me smile; ‘That’s Amore’.

Wedding of Dreams at Terre Di Nano; That’s Amore 31.08.19

August 31st 2019, we awoke on the morning of my big brother’s wedding following the previous night’s welcome drinks in Pienza. Nestled in the heart of southern Tuscany amongst vineyards and rolling hills of the surrounding countryside, Terre Di Nano estate truly was the perfect location for this fairytale wedding to unfold.

Edit 6

As close family to the groom, my sister and I had a room for the weekend in the main building featuring authentic Italian interiors dating back to the 19th century. With big families on both sides of the wedding party, this stunning period estate with plenty of accommodation and two large pools was ideal.

Edit00007.jpgAs the wedding itself wasn’t until 5pm, we had the whole day to get ready and let the excitement build. Whilst my brother was off for a morning spa trip to calm his nerves, I went to visit the bridal suite to wish my future sister-in-law well and also get a sneak peak of the dress and veil.

Edit00007.jpgThe afternoon flew by as we had fun getting ready in our girls dorm. Thankfully our wonderful cousins came by to help with hairstyles and perfecting makeup. With my pearl crown headband to incorporate into my hair, I went with a loosely twisted low ponytail with strands of hair curled around the front to frame my face.

Edit 3.jpgMy dress was from Australia by a Melbourne brand Ache, matched with blush satin Senso shoes from my favourite shoe shop in Sydney Zomp. With such a textured dress I kept accessories simple; pearl asymmetric earrings, Michael Kors rose gold watch, a selection of my best antique gold rings, Cinco gold chain anklet and a simple leather khaki clutch. I was pleased to be wearing a breathable dress given the heat and felt like a princess in my pearl crown headpiece and silk ruffle detail dress.

Edit00093.jpgAs the welcome drinks were taking place at 4pm on the front lawn, I was ready by 3:30 to be on hand to check everything was setup and running to schedule. It was also the perfect opportunity to grab some pics with my girls in our gowns with the picturesque backdrop.

Pic00003.jpgHaving been an overcast day, thankfully by the afternoon the skies cleared and the sun shone through. As guests sipped on their lemonade and mingled on the lawn, the groom and his groomsmen made the finishing touches with their boutonnières. I helped my brother decide on his suit from Massimo Dutti in a deep forest green colour, contrasting to his groomsman in their silver suits.

Edit00038.jpgBeing siblings to the groom, my sister and I also had a corsage each to match the wedding flowers.

Edit00032.jpgAnd so the time came to take our seats for the ceremony. Guests were handed little bags of olive leaf confetti on arrival and each seat had a wooden fan to stay cool in the humidity. With the floral archway set against that incredible Italian landscape as the sun created a golden shower of light, it truly was the perfect setting as the groom waited eagerly for his bride.

Edit00041.jpgAs I witnessed my brother marry his beautiful bride surrounded by all of our close family and so many great friends, I only wish I could’ve paused time at that moment. Many tears of joy were shed as they exchanged their vows and speeches were made about their love as they’ve grown up over the past 10 years together.

Edit00050.jpgAt the request of the bride and groom and in my own effort to be in the moment, no phones were allowed during the ceremony. These are a few snaps my mum managed to capture and of course there will be professional photos to follow, but I was happy to be present and soak up every minute of that special time.

Edit00052.jpgThe bride and groom then welcomed guests to join them on the terrace for champagne and canapés. With an Italian quartet playing as the sunset over the valley, everyone was on a high and congratulated the couple on their seamlessly executed ceremony.

Edit00087.jpgSoon I was being called to have family photos on the lawn. With the sun now twinkling low in the sky, the entire landscape was dripping in golden light.

Edit00071.jpgEvery inch of the wedding was so photogenic and I was eager to make sure I captured photos with as many of my family as possible, not an easy task given the size of our family.

Edit00070.jpgOne of the most important shots to get was us three siblings with our new sister-in-law, and what a stunner she is!

Edit00084The champagne reception continued for a few hours as the bride and groom had to run around getting photos with all of their guests. The canapés kept our hunger at bay as they served wonderful platters of Italian meats, exquisite cheeses and breads.

Edit00062.jpgI couldn’t get enough of this breathtaking view as the sun set creating different hues of pinks and gold across the sky. Prosecco in hand and all of my family around me, this moment felt like we’d left planet earth and reached our own heaven.

Edit00074.jpgSoon it was time to move onto the reception dinner set amongst the olive grove. With fairy lights twinkling overhead and lavish bouquet centrepieces to complete the tables, it looked like a magnificent movie set.

Edit00100.jpgEach place setting came complete with a little bag of lavender and wooden heart with ‘That’s Amore 31.08.19’ carved on the front of it.

Edit00108.jpgThe table layout in a U shape worked wonderfully as the bride and groom could see every one of their guests from the head table.

Edit00124.jpgI had the pleasure of being seated on the top table next to my sister with all of our family down the row in front of us.

Edit00104.jpgIn true Italian style, the dinner was compiled of four courses. To start, a deliciously thick, rich tomato gaspachio soup.

Edit00125.jpgSecondi was zucchini and leek pesto pasta with ricotta cheese and crispy bacon.

Edit00129.jpgFollowing tradition of having meat as a main course, we had beef done medium-rare with creamy dauphinoise potatoes and a mixed salad. Being served one by one, the waiters at Terre Di Nano did a fantastic job of getting around the 120 guests efficiently.

Edit00135.jpgTo accompany the food there was plenty of the estate’s own Terre Di Nano wine to go around. Being in the region renownd for Montepulciano wine, this was the perfect red to compliment the rich, meaty flavours of the dinner.

Edit00113.jpgWith the wine flowing and speeches made giving thanks to all of those involved in planning the day, it was time to cut the cake. Guests gathered around the end of the olive garden to watch as the newlyweds cut into the millefoglie – cake of one thousand layers made of pastry, cream and berries, yum!

Edit00141.jpgA shot of Limoncello and the party continued in the barn next door where the bride and groom had their first dance to Jack Johnson Better Together. Then, just like the stars of their own film, their friend played his original song written especially for them…tissues at the ready again!Edit00144.jpgSo we danced the night away until the early hours of the morning and it was all over in the blink of an eye. Every part of the wedding exceeded expectations and still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it all. From the emotional ceremony overlooking the sweeping hills of Tuscany, to the dreamy dinner beneath the stars, I couldn’t fault one minute of the day.

Edit00138.jpgMost of all, the smiling faces of friends and family who celebrated with us was something money couldn’t buy and is a true testament to the big hearts these two have.

Edit00092

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Nieuwenhuys, I couldn’t be prouder to call you my brother and sister-in-law ❤

Bellissimo Poolside Bliss

It doesn’t get better than long days spent lounging around the pool on holiday with loved ones. With the worries and stresses of home life far away and the only thing on our mind being what delicious Italian food we were going to indulge in next, it felt like we were in our own little paradise for the week.

Edit 2Our villa and grounds at Borgo Poggiardelli in the heart of Tuscany was exquisite with the infinity pool and water well completing such quintessential Italian surroundings. Wearing my new Lack Of Colours rancher hat I too was feeling very European.

Edit 4My usual morning routine on holiday consists of an am workout, followed by a quick jump in the pool to cool off before sitting back to enjoy my morning coffee – given the heat I often opt to make it iced!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIf I’m not reading a magazine or plugged into my current favourite podcast (Venetia Falconer Talking Tastebuds), I try to make the most of catching up and just hanging out with my family. And that is what I consider to be bliss; chilling with my loved ones, listening to music and having a laugh like old times.

Edit 5Bliss; perfect happiness, great joy.

Oh what a night; A Hen to remember

Having been on the other side of the world in the run up to my brother’s wedding next week, I was thrilled to be back in time for the Hen do! With the bride already having celebrated with friends abroad last month, this was the final night with her closest girlfriends and family before jetting off to Italy for the Wedding.

Edit 2.jpgI caught the train into London with my mum and sister for the occasion and it was great to be back in town. The night started in a fabulous bar called Mr Fogg’s House Of Botanicals just off of Goodge Street in the city. We had our own private room up the stunning spiral staircase where we got things going with prosecco and nibbles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe venue was so photographable with all the lavish decor and themed props which reflected an Alice in Wonderland vibe. The service was also impeccable as the waitresses made sure our drinks were flowing and took photos of the ladies to capture the special evening.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATo finish up we ordered in a round of sharing cocktails. Served in bone china cup and saucers, these were fun to drink and equally delicious – my kind of afternoon tea.

Edit 4Before leaving we made sure to get a few shots in front of the gorgeous rose arch doorway.

Edit 6Next on the agenda was a bar just 5 minutes around the corner called Bourne & Hollingsworth. Here I chose to have an Espresso Martini to get me going for the night. This hidden underground bar was a contrast to our previous location and whilst it was a busy Saturday night, they still served up topnotch cocktails very quickly.

Edit 13.jpgAs the drinks continued to flow and the girls were itching for a good dance, we made the decision to go to Little Italy in Soho. Given the Wedding next week in Italy itself, it seemed the perfect place to round up the evening…our bride to be even jumped up on the bar for a final boogy! Edit 7I’m so proud to be calling this bundle of beauty and joy my future sister in law ❤ Congrats bro, you done damn well!

Love brings you home

Sometimes it takes a little time and space to truly appreciate and cherish your humble beginnings. Whilst my adventure down under has been more than I could’ve ever wished for, I’m so excited to be returning home to my loved ones after almost two years away.

Pic04948Up in the clouds on the long journey back to the UK, I can’t help but feel nostalgic reflecting on my experiences and achievements accomplished on my time in Aus. I’m so incredibly lucky to have my family and the life long friends made down under, who I have shared so many beautiful memories with.

Pic04903As I head home to England for a few months, this certainly isn’t the end of the road for my Aussie life as I return to Sydney for the New Year and my 25th Birthday in January…so Ciao for now Aus, it ain’t over yet!

Sydney Sunday

As I leave Aus tomorrow on my trip back home to England, I had to soak up one last weekend in Sydney before I go. First on the agenda was of course what Aussies do best – a brunch date with a good friend on a Sunday morning. We grabbed Acai at Bondi Fruitologist where every bowl served is fully loaded with scrumptious granola and a generous dollop of peanut butter.

Edit 1We strolled the Bondi to Bronte beach walk as we devoured our delicious pots of refreshing acai and caught up on life.

Edit 2When we reached Bronte it was time to grab an arvo coffee. We went to Huxton’s Cafe on the main drag where it was hard to resist the indulgent array of stunning cakes, fluffy doughnuts and largest lamingtons I’d ever seen!

Edit 3Of course a trip into the city wouldn’t be complete without a bit of retail therapy too. I visited Newtown to have a good browse of the eclectic mix of vintage and outlet stores where I finally purchased the perfect dress for my brother’s wedding at the end of the month. Opting for an authentically Australian made peice, the dress was only $69 from the Melbourne brand Ache.

Edit 4One final stop by Paddington for the afternoon and I inevitably ended up in my favourite shoe boutique on Oxford Street. Zomp sells hundreds of covetable designer shoes at a discount price, making it hard to resist adding to my ever growing shoe collection anytime I visit the store. In search of a pair of heels to match the dress for my brother’s wedding, I bought this stunning pair of Senso satin copper pink mules down from $200 to $95.

Pic04809.jpgGoing back to where it all started in the Paddo hood was the perfect way to end my last weekend here in Sydney for a while. It won’t be long before I’m back in town again though, no doubt strolling the beaches in the Australian summer sun with an acai bowl in hand and good friend by my side ❤

Sydney Eats: Bush Cafe Redfern

You’d be forgiven for missing this hidden nook located amongst the neighbourhood of Redfern, yet this innovative new restaurant has already got people talking. Bush is an Australian inspired cafe dreamt up by a couple of local lads passionate about the foods which represent and shape the culture of Aussie households.

Edit 1As a good friend of mine is one of the team behind this new hotspot, we visited the cafe this Friday evening to experience it firsthand (and see our friend in action of course!) Dropping in on a blustery winter’s evening, we were greeted by toy wombats and kangaroos as we took our seats on the wooden benches. At 7pm on a Friday night the place was already packed out.

Edit 2The menu is super simple with their famous cheeseburger taking pride of place as star of the show. We began with the Curry Roo Party Pie, a novelty for me as I’d never tried kangaroo meat before. Whilst this delicacy has struck a nerve with some customers, roo meat is actually very sustainable as there is an abundance of wild kangaroos which get killed and discarded of anyway.

Edit 3That’s not to say this restaurant isn’t vegetarian friendly though – the mixed greens served on a smashed potato salad are delicious and the cheeseburger can even be made veggie with a mushroom pattie.

Edit 4Opting for the traditional beef cheeseburger loaded with pickles and special sauce served on a steamed fresh brioche bun, I would go as far as to say this is one of the best burgers in town!

Edit 5To complete the authentic Aussie feast, we had to try the Fairy Bread n Butter Pudding. Served hot from the oven with a scoop of ice cream, this delightful desert would take any Australian back to their childhood days.

Edit 6Bush cafe has certainly filled a gap in the market when it comes to traditional and somewhat ironic Aussie fare. Whilst the interiors reflect the outback with sandstone walls and wooden table tops carved by locals, the nostalgic menu feels like you’re in the company of true Australians at home – well done lads, keep it real!

Edit 5
