Drinks Setup Aesthetics; Virtual Hen Do

Whilst we’ve missed out on catching up with friends and celebrating special events together in person during these past few months, at least we’ve had the wonders of technology to keep us connected. Swapping our Saturday night dancing shoes for the comfort of our sofa, socialising with groups of friends or family via video call has become the new norm.

Edit 3With it being my girlfriend’s postponed Hen Do date last weekend, we decided to throw her a surprise online Hen party. Having spoken a few days previous with the other Hens to plan some fun themed activities and games, one of the girls also put together a goody bag of our Bride’s favourite nibbles and even a fresh jug of Pimms, delivered to her door just before we all went online.

Edit 5Just like with any typical Hen Do, we did have a laugh discovering some naughty secrets and embarrassing stories – I can’t wait for the real thing postponed now to next year! I suppose lockdown really has brought people together in unique circumstances as we’ve learnt to keep in touch and socialise in new and imaginative ways. I’ve had some really fantastic Zoom meetings with colleagues, family and friends and although being in the confides of home, it’s a great excuse to get a bit dressed up and even put some makeup on for a change.

Edit 4I like to have an aesthetic background for my video calls too, so I’ve been utilising my desk space with my favourite ‘Stay Wild’ print complete with fairy lights and a bunch of fresh flowers each week. These exquisite little white Gypsophila flowers were the perfect finishing touch for the virtual Hen Do and they lasted over a week too.

Edit 1Soon enough we’ll be reunited with our nearest and dearest face to face, but I have also enjoyed the convenience of online socials. Needless to say, it will seem a lot more effort to head to even just the pub for drinks, now that we’ve become so accustomed to the luxury of a snuggly sofa and that bottle of wine ready by our side for top ups!

Date Night; Let’s Be Kids Again

Ok, so we might not be able to get dressed up and go to dinner and the cinema in town at the moment, but there’s nothing stopping us getting a little creative for date night. Last weekend we wanted to make another evening on the sofa a little more interesting, so decided to build an indoor den like back in the days of our childhood.

Edit 2The corner sofa in the lounge was the perfect starting point, then using two camera tripods we were able to lift the middle without too much obstruction inside. Another key element to consider when creating a den is what will secure the sheets together and onto things. For this I would recommend having pegs and elastic bands handy as well as using elements of  your furniture to secure it, such as tucking it behind the sofa cushions or trapping it inside the fastening of a tripod.

It does take a bit of trial and error to get it right, but this is all part of the fun and tests your ability to work together of course. Once the skeleton of our den was complete, I went about making all the finishing touches using plenty of blankets and cushions for a super cosy interior. I also had a few strings of fairy lights which gave the perfect ethereal mood lighting for our dreamy den.

Edit 6Ready with a bottle of wine, popcorn and a movie, I was so chuffed with our awesome date night setup. We had envisioned sleeping in our creation for the night, however we realised that the tripod legs would be too much of an obstacle when trying to sleep! Instead we left it up for a couple days and enjoyed the change of scenery for a few evenings in front of the TV.

Edit 7Whether you do this with your partner, family or even housemates, it really is a fun way to shake up movie night at home during lockdown. I definitely felt like a kid again as we cosied up and escaped the madness of the outside world in our fairytale fort.

Slow Morning Oatmeal

Happy bank holiday Monday 🙂 I can’t quite believe it’s the end of the month already, where has May gone? As we dive into summertime and dawn breaks earlier and earlier, I find it harder to sleep in as late as usual. This has helped me get back into a better morning routine of working out first thing, making my bed, getting dressed and enjoying a hearty breakfast to kick start my day.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe weather may be warming up, but I still love to make my favourite oatmeal topped with fresh fruits and creamy peanut butter. I often add apple slices to thicken the oatmeal and with it being berry season, juicy red strawberries and warmed blueberry compote are my current toppings of choice.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis breakfast is so satisfying and keeps me full until the afternoon. Balanced with carbs, fats and natural sugars, my oatmeal bowl replenishes my body after a workout whilst helping to build muscle too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAServed in an aesthetic coconut bowl complete with a wooden spoon, this reminds me of the beautiful acai bowls we had almost everyday in Bali. Simply warming the blueberries in a splash of water creates that dreamy pool of purple jam to sweeten the oatmeal without artificial sugars.

Edit 6The simple pleasure of taking the time to sit down and enjoy my delicious brekkie is definitely something I will miss when I return to work. I take this moment to plan my objectives for the day and have a browse of my favourite blogs for inspiration and ideas. I’ve really tried to use this period of lockdown as an opportunity to be innovative and learn some new skills too, because sometimes I think it takes a little slower pace in life to reignite that passion for learning and creating.

Twas A Merry Christmas

Having spent this time last year in the scorching hot Australian heat swapping turkey for cold ham, seafood and salads, I was looking forward to being back amongst the traditions and festivities of jolly old England again. Whilst I certainly enjoyed a dip in the lake and beers on the beach last year in Aus, Christmas isn’t quite the same without wrapping up by the fire and sitting up to a feast of food and drinks.

Edit 1.jpgWaking on Christmas morning at home, we were treated to clear blue skies as the sun glistened through the crisp winter air. After opening our presents sipping some bubbly, we drove over to my Auntie’s house in Surrey. I was thrilled to be wearing my fabulous new prescription sunglasses by Kenzo.

Edit 3.jpgAs always my Auntie and Uncle’s home was exquisitely decorated with tasteful touches of Christmas and aromas of the roast dinner cooking away welcoming us as we arrived.

Edit 4.jpgIt was a very much scaled down family affair for us this year as our international family continues to expand. Nevertheless it was lovely to be with close family again and soak up the festivities as we drank and ate wonderful food. Starter was Jamie Oliver’s seafood cocktail with smoked salmon, prawns and a thousand island dressing – a classic Christmas entree.

Edit 5The main event was of course a traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings including my favourite bread sauce with leeks. After enjoying a perfectly matched white wine to have with my starter, I moved onto red to compliment the rich flavours of dinner. Every single mouthful was scrumptious!

Edit 6.jpgAfter such a culinary delight, we all slumped on the sofa and kicked back to watch the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. Later we served the cheese along with an assortment of deserts including mince pies, Christmas pudding and a decedent cream and chocolate choux pastry. A midnight Baileys finished me off before I curled up in bed feeling very merry indeed, the way it should be 😉

Festive Feels at Four Seasons

With festive season in full swing as we find ourselves just one week away from Christmas, merry atmosphere and joyous ambience floods the Four Seasons. Nestled in the quintessential English countryside of Hampshire, twinkling lights encase the manor house entrance with a warming glow as guests are invited in to celebrate the season in style and luxury.

Edit 1As a resort destination offering more than just accommodation and dining, the Four Seasons Hampshire pulls out all the stops at Christmas to create a true winter wonderland experience. From a pop-up glice rink and kids movie room, to the festive afternoon tea and speciality themed cocktails, there is something to suit all tastes.

Edit 2Stepping foot into the warming reception with its grand fireplace welcoming guests in from the crisp winter air, the hotel glistens and sparkles with touches of Christmas sprinkled throughout. Scents of holly and fragrant spices of the giant gingerbread house linger in the air as the perfectly proportioned Christmas tree sits majestically enveloped by the grand staircase.

Edit 4If you’re looking for a little countryside escape to soak up those nostalgic feels, Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire is certainly the destination to get lost and recapture that childlike magic of Christmas.

Early Morning Hues

There’s nothing more rewarding than waking up in time for sunrise and catching that early morning golden light shower casting such picturesque tones.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI haven’t always been an early bird as I’m naturally more productive in the evenings. However with a new routine and 9-5 job, I have learnt to embrace the crack of dawn and soak up my morning me time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter drawing back the curtains, the first thing I do every single morning is make the bed to set me up for a positive, productive day; clear space, clear mind.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMost mornings I will then do a half an hour workout and stretching routine which energises my body and releases any tension from sleeping. Having danced all of my life, I feel sluggish and tired when I don’t exert myself physically, so I make this a priority.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter a quick shower and simple makeup routine, I relish the process of choosing my outfit for the day as fashion and style has always been a passion of mine. Finally, I make my morning coffee in a keep cup and take 5 minutes to catch the morning news as I savour that moment before dashing to work.

Picture This; Gallery Musings at Hartley Antiques

Being a photographer, my mum Caroline has always had an eye for art and loves visiting exhibitions and discovering new artists. Following the switch to digital photography over the past 15 years or so, consequently the business for photo printing and framing took a huge hit and so Caroline decided to close her village shop Picture This to focus on the photography.

Edit 2With her passion and knowledge for art, just over a year ago the opportunity to open her own gallery arose and it seemed too good of a prospect to miss. Now indulging in her love for images and framing, Caroline brings together a collection of pieces from a varied source of local artists as well as posters, photos and prints purchased at auction, exhibitions and online.

Edit 3The eclectic mix of traditional paintings to abstract canvases and modern prints makes for an interesting viewing experience, enticing customers to perhaps invest in art they wouldn’t usually choose. My preference tends to be the more abstract, modernistic pieces such as this ‘Art Of Kissing’ poster.

Edit 4I also really like this collection of original press photographs which capture the spirit of celebrities in their raw form often unseen to the public eye.

Edit 5However I too occasionally find myself drawn to work which wouldn’t normally be to my taste. This oil painting by Sergio Kendall caught my attention with its vibrant colours and abstract style. As a feature on the main wall hung amongst a variety of different posters, paintings and photographs, this stunning piece catches the viewers eye.

Edit 1The space is very much an expression of my mum’s niche, yet stylish taste and brings together a broad range of art in all kinds of forms. Her ethos when approached by artists or searching for new pieces is to ‘never sell anything in the gallery that I wouldn’t have in my own home’. This is what makes the vision unique at Picture This.

Heckfield Place; Hampshire’s Hidden Gem

Nestled amongst the peaceful Hampshire countryside, this newly renovated Georgian family home has been transformed into one of South England’s most exclusive estates. Having won The Sunday Times Hotel Of The Year 2018 and secured a place the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List 2019 amongst other esteemed awards, Heckfield Place certainly has set the bar already just a year or so after its opening.

Edit 1.jpg

Whilst it has taken almost 10 years to complete this project, the Hong-Kong real estate tycoon Gerald Chan has perfected this magical retreat to offer the highest level of luxury, redefining the idea of a hotel.

Edit 4.jpgTaking inspiration from its classic 18th century origins woven into the 400 acre surrounding English landscape, their ethos focuses on reconnecting with the land. From the walled gardens and orchard where chef Skye Gyngell sources produce, to the lake where guests may take a dip, everything is drawn from nature to rediscover our connection to the ancient land.

Edit 8.jpgAs a local and living just down the road from this elusive, highly acclaimed hotel, I was keen to visit this wonderland for myself. The Assembly at Heckfield place offers a diverse  programme of events cultivating the space and all it has to offer.

Pic00008.jpgWith so many experiences open to guests and visitors alike there is something for everyone; whether its taking a walking woodland tour and foraging for mushrooms, putting your hand to professional cocktail making, or getting active with Bodyism’s B Free Yoga class.

Edit 2.jpg I was particularly intrigued by the sound of the plush cinema room screening classic films as well as new releases. So being my Dad’s Birthday a few weeks back, I brought him, my mum and I tickets to go and see the new Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Tarantino film. Arriving one September Sunday afternoon, looming grey skies set a moody atmosphere in contrast to the colourful autumnal leaves lining the grand driveway of Heckfield Place.

Pic00001.jpgUpon entering the main house, we were greeted by the front of house staff who were happy to give us a tour of the different communal areas, before we settled down in the bar for a drink. The eclectic interiors tastefully combine elements of original Georgian heritage, alongside modern features to achieve a stylish yet homely feel.

Edit 5.jpgPrior to our cinema viewing, we took a seat in the Trestle Bar lounge where we enjoyed a glass of G&T as we browsed the interesting coffee table books and admired our exquisite surroundings. Our hostess also informed us that most of the artwork and furniture is from the owner’s personal collection.

Edit 6

I certainly felt right at home and will be keen to spend more time perusing the books and studying the artwork on my next visit.

Edit 10.jpgSoon it was time to take our seats for the film, taking a trip via the theatre bar first of course. With a selection of drinks and homemade sweet treats on offer, you can enjoy your favourite glass of wine or cocktail whilst watching the film.

Edit 12.jpgThe intimate theatre room with its plush leather seating and personal side tables, makes for a truly special cinema experience. At only £15 per ticket, I was astounded by the luxury of this spectacular theatre room open to the public. As we sipped our G&T’s watching Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, I felt like I was on our very own set for an English period drama.

Edit 13.jpgOverall, it was fabulous to explore Heckfield Place for ourselves and as a local from just down the road, I will be coming back to experience more of their exciting events. I will also be keen to book into the Marle restaurant and sample their set lunch menu or even pop in for breakfast following a yoga class…I do feel rather smug to have this fabulous estate right on my doorstep!

Highlands Merchant; Best Coffee in Town

One thing the Aussies can confidently claim to do best and take very seriously is their coffee. Consequently, the cafe culture is a competitive market here with brilliant baristas to match.

Edit 1My favourite place for an arvo coffee hit in the south is Highlands Merchant. With its art deco inspired decor and selection of niche cookbooks and kitchenwares on offer, this cafe is perfect for mulling over a book or magazine whilst sipping your favourite hot beverage served to perfection.

Edit 3The friendly staff are always welcoming and they’re never short of a delectable selection of sweet treats baked fresh daily. Their savoury muffins are a must to try or if you have time, the extensive brunch menu has something for all tastes.

Edit 4So if you do happen to pass through Moss Vale, it would be hard to miss the pastel hues and rose gold exteriors of Highlands Merchant. From tradies on their way to work to local mums getting their 11am coffee fix, this local gem is known for serving the best coffee in town!

Moss Vale Musings

So here I find myself, back in the homely Southern Highlands for a few weeks of rest-bite prior to my return to the UK. Following such a turbulent eight months living and working full-time in Sydney, an escape to the countryside was much needed.

Edit 6Moving back to Moss Vale where I did my farm work, it felt like I was already home. I was lucky enough to spend the first week in the comfort of my boyfriend’s family home where I was spoilt with home cooked dinners and nights in front of the fire watching films. Whilst I find it hard to not do much and take the time off, it has been absolute bliss indulging in quality me time.

Edit 1The southern area exudes countryside chic reflected in the beautiful interiors of the houses. Much like their fashion, Australians stick to simple decor taking the ‘less is more’ approach. The result – a peaceful, fuss-free environment which is easy to relax in.

Edit 5Wondering around the boutiques of Mossy, I can’t help but get inspired by the classic simplicity achieved with a few key pieces to bring aesthetics together. Stripping back the need for lots of things makes for a more calming environment.

Edit 10I still can’t believe my luck to have found myself in such an idealic area which reflects the quintessential countryside town of my own home county Hampshire back in England. However whilst I cosy up in front of the warmth of fires snuggled in blankets here, the English will be soaking up the summer sun on the other side of the world…and I’ll be joining them soon!
