Packing Up Paddo

Having lived with family on and off over the past year in Paddington, it’s time to pack my bags (including copious amounts of shoes) and find my own digs in Sydney. Being so central to the city yet close to the beaches, Paddo has been a brilliant stomping ground for me as I’ve found my feet in a new city, not to mention the trendy bars, most highly rated restaurants and chic boutique stores that occupy hidden corners of this neighbourhood.

Edit 2.jpgOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASpending my weekends browsing the markets, trying another new coffee shop and meeting my friends for avro drinks in one of the quintessential pubs, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. However such an exclusive postcode comes at a price and an opportunity arose to live with a family friend in Lavender Bay. Given the idyllic location and beautiful apartment on offer, I decided to take the leap from central Sydney to just over the bridge…Edit 6.jpgNestled right by the harbour bridge over in North Sydney, Lavender Bay is a hidden gem with sweeping views over the city and only a short ride into the CBD. I can’t wait to explore what this exclusive part of town has to offer with its numerous harbourfront bars and restaurants as well as Wendy’s Secret Garden which is just on my doorstep. Whilst this will be an exciting adventure discovering a new area of the city, I do see myself living back in the bustling hood of Paddo in the future. In the meantime, I’ll still be back regularly to see family and visit my favourite shops and bars as I pass by on my way to the beaches during summer.

Byron Eats: Combi Acai

My motto when I reach a any new destination is first and foremost, find the best brekky in town by scanning the trending spots on Instagram or Pinterest. So being a beachside town known for its health food cafes feeding the bellies of those Aussie beach bums showcasing their washboard abs, I was keen to scope out Byron’s best answer to my Acai cravings.

combiArriving on NYE afternoon, everywhere was packed out and we were lucky to grab a table in the most happening place in town for a healthy lunch. Combi cafe was top of my list for getting the best all-day brekky with its extensive menu including a vast selection of Acai and superfood bowls, not to mention the cool bohemian interiors which eco simple Scandinavian style to create a relaxed, laid back atmosphere.

Edit 5.jpgI ordered the classic Acai Bowl blended with house made nut mylk topped with banana coins, apple, berries, coconut flakes and a hidden base of crunchy activated caramelized burkini bites, whilst my boyfriend enjoyed his bowl laden with cacao nibs and peanut butter (which I had to take a spoonful of!). Our bowls came in good time with friendly service too, something I could really appreciate as the staff were clearly working hard to meet the demands of a packed out bank holiday lunch rush.

Edit 6.jpgCoffee was on point too, served in stunning blue crockery to match the beachy theme of coconut shell bowls and food served on rustic wooden boards. With potted palms and living herbs on the kitchen bench to bring the outside air in, alongside a seventies inspired pastel colour pallette and exposed plumbing fixtures, the overall ambiance is contemporary and cool yet cosy and homely.

Founded upon the principle that eating well can be just as delicious and exciting, Combi uses only organic, locally sourced ingredients to offer a menu of enticing raw treats and eats which are nourishing for both the body and soul. If you’re stopping off in Byron Bay anytime soon, I would encourage you to visit Combi not only to sample the best in superfood, but to dine al fresco and soak up that salty sea air whilst rubbing shoulders with the eclectic mix of Byron locals.

Byron and Beyond: New Years Road Trip

When you think of the typical Aussie surfers paradise with an eclectic mix of locals from all corners of the world seeking sun, sea, arts, culture, music, food and a buzzing social scene all in one place, Byron is the number one destination. So with some time on our hands over the holidays and somewhere I had on my bucket list to visit, we decided to take a road trip up the north coast to spend New Years in the bohemian town of Byron and explore some hidden gems on our way back.

pic00002Packing up the Defender and our little boat complete with a nifty camping setup, we hit the road a day before NYE and covered some good distance on our first leg up the coast from Sydney. Making it all the way to Sawtell by dusk, we were about to get some groceries and park up for the night, when my boyfriend spotted an old friend who lives in town. He invited us to stay the night, so we brought in some cheeses, meats, dips, bread and wine to graze on as the boys had a catch up and reminisced on old times.

pic00001The next day was NYE so we got going in the early morning with the view of buying last minute tickets to Falls Festival. We didn’t reach Byron until gone 1pm, so instead we decided to make the most of our final day in 2018 and spend the evening in town soaking up the atmosphere. Following cocktails at the Beach Hotel, we found a perfect spot on the headland just out of central Byron to park up and camp for the night.

pic00003A quick freshen up and a few vinos sat on top the Defender and we were ready for our NYE in Byron Bay. We stumbled across a fab spot for dinner at Miss Margarita overlooking the beachfront as we sipped prosecco and devoured our Mexican feast of chipotle chicken nachos and fish burritos. The town was alive and so much going on, from jams on the beach to night markets where I bought a Snowflake of Obsidian gemstone anklet meant to balance the body, mind and spirit – just what I need for a fresh start in the new year! Following the countdown on Byron Beach, we danced the night away at a local pub The Great Northerner and ended celebrations with a stunning moonlit walk up the beach to where we were camping.

pic00004pic00006New Years day and our delicate heads were fixed with a dip in the lagoon and morning of mooching the boutique shops of Byron. Before leaving, we also visited The Farm with its popular cafe and restaurant on site run by the founders of hatted restaurant Three Blue Ducks in Sydney. Here we enjoyed a much needed coffee and spot of brunch overlooking the sunflower fields before another long leg on the road. It was a busy time of year with the holidays in full swing, so I would be keen to visit another time to experience the true free-spirited local vibes of hippie Byron Bay.

pic00008Pic00072.jpgEnding up back in Sawtell where we had initially scoped out a good spot to camp by the river, we launched the boat late afternoon and got fishing as the sun went down at golden hour. With a quiet river to ourselves, tunes playing in the background and a glass of vino in hand, it was the most blissful way to welcome in the first day of 2019. Our setup for the night was just perfect too, with a makeshift kitchen laid out on the grass and boat back on dry land set up with the bed ready to fall into after dinner. I made the most of what we had as shops had closed early on the bank holiday, even having to use tin foil for makeshift plates! I put together some bruschetta with cucumber, tomato and lemon for starters before steaming some broccoli and corn to accompany our little white fish from the days catch – modest yet so tasty.

pic00012pic00014After a morning dip, we ventured into the quaint old town of Bellingen to have a coffee in the trendy cafe/shop Hyde and later lunch at No 5 Church Street. I would highly recommend this hidden spot on a quiet side street for food in Bellingen with its quirky interiors and menu to suit all tastes. I opted for a delicious pumpkin feta salad and my boyfriend raved about the chicken burger and ‘best chips’ he’d ever had! Bellies full we visited the Promised Lands just out of town for an afternoon swim and more fishing. This is a truly stunning area of natural beauty with a fresh water stream running through the heart of the woodlands and large plunge pools for taking a dip.

Pic01297.jpgOur final night of cooking beneath the stars, we polished off our wine supply whilst discussing our hopes and plans for the year ahead. It was certainly a journey of prosperity and growth for me here in Oz and now I find myself diving head first into a second year here! I could never have dreamed what this adventure had in store for me and the happiness it would bring along with it, so I intend to go forward with an open mind and ready to embrace the opportunities 2019 has to offer…’Dare to go beyond your wildest dreams and your true potential will follow.’

Mollymook Magic

With a couple days spare before our New Years road trip up the coast, we found ourselves back in Mollymook to catch up with more friends. Having had a spontaneous Boxing Day evening out fuelled with one crate too many of VBs, we nursed our hangovers with brekky at Tallwood cafe. We both had the fruit bowl with a superfood nut seed mix and coffee to get us going for the day.

Edit 3.jpgAfter a quick dip in the ocean to reset our bodies, we visited my boyfriend’s auntie and uncle’s place where we could chill for a few hours in the cool air-conditioning. I also got to catch up on some journal writing which I hadn’t had time for over the Christmas period. It was the most idyllic setup as I sat overlooking the golf course and Mollymook beach.

edit 4edit 6That evening we were welcomed to stay the night and kindly invited to join a BBQ with yet more yummy offerings of seafood, steak and salads. I was in charge of serving the G&Ts which gave me a good head-start for our night out in the local town of Ulladulla.

edit 1edit 5 Joining our mate who is founder and producer of Mammals, we were off to see a Babe Rainbow gig at The Marlin. Another night on the VBs and some good tunes was a recipe for a fun filled evening of dancing around and having a good laugh. I thought Molly was just a quiet family seaside town, little did I know there is a buzzing young community scene in and around quaint Magical Mollymook!

Christmas Wrapped Up

It was never going to be a normal Christmas away from home in the bitter cold air of England sipping mulled wine and snuggling by the fire. Instead I embraced the hot summer days down the south coast of Oz and lapped up those afternoons on the beach as I experienced my first Christmas in Australia.

Edit 3.jpgEdit 7.jpgWhilst I missed my close family and friends over the festive period, I had nothing to complain about swapping snow and dark winter evenings for 30 degree heat. With 2 weeks off work I left Sydney for the holidays to spend time with my family who have a stunning home in the seaside town of Mollymook. Bringing my boyfriend along too, it was an opportunity to spend quality time together as we explored the local area and hidden gems such as Jones Beach. It was a Christmas break filled with fun events and family affair between Mollymook and the Southern Highlands.

Edit 6.jpgChristmas Day reached scorching hot temperatures as we were welcomed with open arms to my boyfriend’s auntie’s beautiful farm in Berry. Overlooking the luscious green fields with cattle and kangaroos grazing side by side, we were treated to a delicious spread of food very much different to the traditional English Christmas roast dinner. To accompany the roast ham there were platters of lovely salads as well as plenty of seafood including a whole baked salmon with pesto herb crust and buckets and buckets of prawns – yum!

Edit 10.jpgEdit 8.jpgAfter a mezze of deserts featuring lots of fruit and my favourite pavlova, we soaked up the afternoon sun whilst we sipped our coffee and just about fit in a slither of Christmas fruit cake. Later the boys couldn’t help but get up to some fun and games as they towed each other across the lake on a wakeboard attached to the farm buggy!

Pic00007.jpgLater that evening I got to FaceTime my family back in England who were just waking up for their Christmas morning. I sent home a personalised card with flowers and a bottle of bubbly for the family and I opened my little package of presents whilst on the phone to them. Despite missing them all very much back home, I’m so thankful to have such amazing family even on the other side of the world who have been so hospitable and welcoming to me during my first Christmas in Oz.

Heavenly Heights at Henry Deane, Hotel Palisade

With my boyfriend travelling a lot for work, we like to make the most of our time together and indulge when we can. So I was incredibly lucky this week to be surprised with a stay at the luxurious Hotel Palisade upon his return from a 2 week trip away. Located on the Rocks at Millers Point, rooms feature views of the Harbour Bridge and city skyline with English themed decor adding to the charm and character of this Old Sydney Town retreat.

Edit 1Staying on level 2 in the North-West facing George Power suite, our room featured a separate lounge, bathroom and mini bar including espresso coffee machine and plenty of naughty snacks (which we later tucked into following a few drinks!). Exquisite interiors such as a retro Marshall radio, an old English phone and artwork by local Australian artists made us feel right at home as we kicked back and relaxed after a long day at work.

Edit 2Later we made our way to the rooftop bar for dinner and drinks at the highly rated Henry Deane restaurant. Having had a browse on their Instagram page, I couldn’t wait to checkout this trendy spot and what it had to offer. Aside from breathtaking views over the heart of Sydney, the bar boasts a menu of tempting cocktails and wines alongside sharing dishes from oysters and seafood, to steak and cheese. We opted for the crispy rosemary potatoes with roasted yeast mayonnaise accompanied by the grilled lamb cutlets. Perfectly paired with a few glasses of Tabali Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, the potatoes were crispy yet fluffy and the cutlets tender and tasty.

Edit 5With a glass of wine in hand and the glistening lights of Sydney reflecting over the harbour, I could definitely get used to these heavenly heights to wind down after work every night!

Nestled in my corner of Paddo

Having lived in Paddo at my Auntie and Uncle’s since the day I got to Aus, I can’t help but feel this is my home in Sydney. Of course I will always be welcome to stay with my family who have already helped me out so much, but as I begin my second year down under, it’s time to find my own accommodation. I can’t wait to share a house with new friends and get into the swing of life back in the city. My preference is definitely Paddington or one of the surrounding suburbs, but even the thought of Bondi to be by the beach for summer is appealing too. I will continue my search with this in mind, but always return to the Paddo hood for delicious dinners and fantastic parties hosted by my Auntie and Uncle in their beautiful corner of Paddington.

Prosecco Party; Stories Told, Memories Made

Take a group of old school friends, a few bottles of prosecco and a spread of delicious nibbles and you have yourself an evening full of giggles and fun. Coming back from the other side of the world for a few weeks, I couldn’t help but plan an evening with my favourite girls involving good food and plenty of booze!

edit-14.jpgAlways being one for a cheese board and regular customer of our local wine bar, I had to provide a platter of delicious offerings including lots of fruits, pickles, cured meats and chutneys to accompany the carefully selected array of cheese. Also known for my love of creating and consuming beautiful salads, I made a salad inspired by a recent visit to Cote Brasserie which included apple, currents, walnuts, goats cheese and a honey mustard dressing. A board of fresh french stick with oil, balsamic and basil leaves was the perfect accompaniment to complete the nibbles table.

Edit 19When originally planning the gathering, I had envisioned using my bar skills and putting together some fancy cocktails. However I was far more concerned with getting the food prepped so opted for pink sparkling and endless bottles of prosecco to quench my guest’s thirst. My mum even kindly lent us her stunning antique prosecco coupes which were the perfect prop for photos too.

Edit 21Another important component to creating the perfect setting was the music. I linked my spotify to the speakers and put on my go to chilled house music mix from Majestic Casual. Some cute fairy lights and candles made for a cosy setting around the coffee table – the girls said it looked like Christmas in there!

Edit 20I wore my new knitted jumper which I’d spotted in a little boutique in Farnham along with my favourite ruffle suede mules from Zomp Shoez in Sydney. When the girls arrived at 4pm I couldn’t wait to pop the bubbly, relax and catch up on life with my friends. It couldn’t have been a more perfect setup in which to enjoy each other’s company and soak up the time with my girls.

edit-31.jpgOf course we had planned on moving the night onto the local club in town and having started in the late afternoon, by the evening we were more than ready to let our hair down on the dance floor. This is where the night got a little more boozy as we ordered in the tequila shots and jaeger bombs! Let’s just say there were definitely some memories made and stories to be told…

Love Brings You Home

They say home is where the heart is and sometimes it takes a little distance (or moving to the other side of the world in my case) to realise just how much you value closest family and friends. I find myself back home for a few weeks before I begin my next adventure in Australia, yet returning to my quaint village life beginnings after almost a year away, it doesn’t feel like I ever left.

Edit 4Walking through the front door I’m greeted with an overwhelming scent of home and my beautiful room is still just as I left it. I always took such pride in decorating my room with stylish interiors and memorabilia including precious photos from over the years. I’ve continued to make the effort to print those special photos despite everything being digital now so I can look back on cherished memories. It was also a joy to be reunited with my wardrobe of gorgeous clothes and shoes which I have a new appreciation for since I’ve been living out of my suitcase for 10 months!

edit-3.jpgNow having been back in England for a week, it doesn’t feel like a day has passed since I left. Coming back has reminded me of my humble roots and the fabulous family and friends I have who are always there and support me no matter what – that’s what makes home a home.

Just Another Rock to my Wall

Leaving England on my adventure to Australia 9 months ago, I never would’ve dreamed of the reality I currently find myself in… stone walling and living with two Aussie boys in the Southern Highlands in order to earn my visa extension. With my initial couple of months working on another farm up and farms elsewhere reluctant to take on new staff with the difficulties of the draught here, I took matters into my own hands. Through a contact of a friend, I’m now building stone walls on properties in the area.

Edit 3.jpgEdit 4

Now let me explain my exact role here, as there’s no kidding that I’m constructing these stone walls single handedly! With my perfectionist and somewhat artistic eye, my main job is to plug the front wall faces to give an aesthetically pleasing final result. Whilst the cold, frosty 6am morning starts haven’t been my finest hours, I’ve really thrown myself into working onsite and enjoying the camaraderie of the boys during breaks. As the weeks have passed, I’ve got to see the progress of the projects we are working on and appreciate the process of traditional stone walling.

Edit 1So as I continue my new found profession as a stone waller in the Southern Highlands, I can already taste Australian spring and look forward to working away in the heat of a summers day. It may not be the most glamorous of jobs and takes a lot of patience, but it certainly is one to add to my CV as another string to my bow, or more appropriately ‘rock to my wall’.
