Mollymook Magic

With a couple days spare before our New Years road trip up the coast, we found ourselves back in Mollymook to catch up with more friends. Having had a spontaneous Boxing Day evening out fuelled with one crate too many of VBs, we nursed our hangovers with brekky at Tallwood cafe. We both had the fruit bowl with a superfood nut seed mix and coffee to get us going for the day.

Edit 3.jpgAfter a quick dip in the ocean to reset our bodies, we visited my boyfriend’s auntie and uncle’s place where we could chill for a few hours in the cool air-conditioning. I also got to catch up on some journal writing which I hadn’t had time for over the Christmas period. It was the most idyllic setup as I sat overlooking the golf course and Mollymook beach.

edit 4edit 6That evening we were welcomed to stay the night and kindly invited to join a BBQ with yet more yummy offerings of seafood, steak and salads. I was in charge of serving the G&Ts which gave me a good head-start for our night out in the local town of Ulladulla.

edit 1edit 5 Joining our mate who is founder and producer of Mammals, we were off to see a Babe Rainbow gig at The Marlin. Another night on the VBs and some good tunes was a recipe for a fun filled evening of dancing around and having a good laugh. I thought Molly was just a quiet family seaside town, little did I know there is a buzzing young community scene in and around quaint Magical Mollymook!

Christmas Wrapped Up

It was never going to be a normal Christmas away from home in the bitter cold air of England sipping mulled wine and snuggling by the fire. Instead I embraced the hot summer days down the south coast of Oz and lapped up those afternoons on the beach as I experienced my first Christmas in Australia.

Edit 3.jpgEdit 7.jpgWhilst I missed my close family and friends over the festive period, I had nothing to complain about swapping snow and dark winter evenings for 30 degree heat. With 2 weeks off work I left Sydney for the holidays to spend time with my family who have a stunning home in the seaside town of Mollymook. Bringing my boyfriend along too, it was an opportunity to spend quality time together as we explored the local area and hidden gems such as Jones Beach. It was a Christmas break filled with fun events and family affair between Mollymook and the Southern Highlands.

Edit 6.jpgChristmas Day reached scorching hot temperatures as we were welcomed with open arms to my boyfriend’s auntie’s beautiful farm in Berry. Overlooking the luscious green fields with cattle and kangaroos grazing side by side, we were treated to a delicious spread of food very much different to the traditional English Christmas roast dinner. To accompany the roast ham there were platters of lovely salads as well as plenty of seafood including a whole baked salmon with pesto herb crust and buckets and buckets of prawns – yum!

Edit 10.jpgEdit 8.jpgAfter a mezze of deserts featuring lots of fruit and my favourite pavlova, we soaked up the afternoon sun whilst we sipped our coffee and just about fit in a slither of Christmas fruit cake. Later the boys couldn’t help but get up to some fun and games as they towed each other across the lake on a wakeboard attached to the farm buggy!

Pic00007.jpgLater that evening I got to FaceTime my family back in England who were just waking up for their Christmas morning. I sent home a personalised card with flowers and a bottle of bubbly for the family and I opened my little package of presents whilst on the phone to them. Despite missing them all very much back home, I’m so thankful to have such amazing family even on the other side of the world who have been so hospitable and welcoming to me during my first Christmas in Oz.

Heavenly Heights at Henry Deane, Hotel Palisade

With my boyfriend travelling a lot for work, we like to make the most of our time together and indulge when we can. So I was incredibly lucky this week to be surprised with a stay at the luxurious Hotel Palisade upon his return from a 2 week trip away. Located on the Rocks at Millers Point, rooms feature views of the Harbour Bridge and city skyline with English themed decor adding to the charm and character of this Old Sydney Town retreat.

Edit 1Staying on level 2 in the North-West facing George Power suite, our room featured a separate lounge, bathroom and mini bar including espresso coffee machine and plenty of naughty snacks (which we later tucked into following a few drinks!). Exquisite interiors such as a retro Marshall radio, an old English phone and artwork by local Australian artists made us feel right at home as we kicked back and relaxed after a long day at work.

Edit 2Later we made our way to the rooftop bar for dinner and drinks at the highly rated Henry Deane restaurant. Having had a browse on their Instagram page, I couldn’t wait to checkout this trendy spot and what it had to offer. Aside from breathtaking views over the heart of Sydney, the bar boasts a menu of tempting cocktails and wines alongside sharing dishes from oysters and seafood, to steak and cheese. We opted for the crispy rosemary potatoes with roasted yeast mayonnaise accompanied by the grilled lamb cutlets. Perfectly paired with a few glasses of Tabali Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, the potatoes were crispy yet fluffy and the cutlets tender and tasty.

Edit 5With a glass of wine in hand and the glistening lights of Sydney reflecting over the harbour, I could definitely get used to these heavenly heights to wind down after work every night!

Sydney Eats: Bare Naked Bowls Surry Hills

So I finally made it to the weekend after my first week back at full time work in Sydney. Whilst I was tempted to spend the weekend going out and partying with friends, I decided to take the time to myself and relax doing some of those things which feed my soul. Aside from shopping and drinking far too much coffee, I’m obsessed in the all-day brekky culture here in Aus which often includes avo toast and acai bowls.

Edit 1.jpgBeing an acai bowl addict, I strolled down the road to Surry Hills where Bare Naked Bowls has opened another cafe. Serving every kind of acai bowl with toppings galore and health drink blend you can imagine, this place is my idea of heaven. Arriving in the late afternoon on a Saturday, I managed to grab a little table overlooking the bustling neighbourhood corner of Surry Hills.

Edit 2.jpgEdit 9.jpgAfter much consideration over the delectable choice of blends and toppings on offer I chose the Hippie Bowl, a blend of organic acai berry, banana, blueberry, organic hemp protein and macadamia milk with a topping of handmade nut granola, banana, goji berry, strawberries, blueberries, organic hemp seeds and natural peanut butter drizzle. I asked to swap the hemp seeds for coconut chips to complete what I believed to be the perfect combo; creamy sweet acai paired with crunchy granola, chewy gojis and morish peanut butter.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAComing in at $16 per bowl, it was worth the price given the generous portion size and immaculate Instagramable presentation alongside friendly service. I can’t wait to return to try another one of the inticing bowl combos at their other stores in both Manly and Bronte; here’s to those hot summer days munching on a cooling bowl of delicious acai by the beach.

Picnic Centennial Park Sydney

How else do you spend a scorching hot Sunday but in the park having a picnic with family and friends. With my other auntie and uncle over from the UK, we made the most of our weekend and inevitably were nursing a hangover from a boozy Thai banquet dinner at Muum Maam in Surry Hills the night before. A relaxed afternoon lounging in the park with ice cold soda and a mezze of delightful food was the perfect cure for a delicate head!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe chose to settle ourselves amongst the greenery of Centennial Parklands nestled in the shade away from the 33 degree heat – always be weary of that powerful Aussie sun! Once all of our friends arrived it was time to lay out the spread of delicious food we had prepared. The original plan was to BBQ, however following a trip to the grocery store we opted for a ready cooked rotisserie chicken which we could serve straight up alongside the mezze of goodies. Everyone was so generous and contributed to the feast which included deli meats, cheeses, pickles, chutneys, dips, crackers, fresh bread, salads and fruits to finish.

edit 2It was a classic English style picnic with the perfect components to make all kinds of sandwiches which we had spent the morning discussing and debating our favourite combos. I personally couldn’t get enough of the piccalilli with chicken as well as tabouli salad with tzatziki on the side. There were plenty of veggies for hummus dipping and perfectly ripe cherries to munch away on, the only thing missing was a Pimms jug!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWith the day to relax and a gentle breeze easing the sweltering temperature, it was the idyllic afternoon to chat away and graze on our spread of nibbles. Once our bellies were full and satisfied, we got moving with a game of cricket followed by giant twister which never fails to be a good laugh. Later in the afternoon we packed up base, taking all rubbish with us of course, and got back to jump in the pool asap!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANow summer is here and Christmas holidays are fast approaching, I can’t wait for more days soaking up the picturesque corners of Sydney. Parks often get overlooked with the beaches being the popular choice on weekends, so I’ll certainly be taking more trips to this luscious green escape away from the city for a quiet Sunday stroll or picnicking with friends, Pimms in hand of course.

Tourist in my own Town, London

Strolling the streets of London once again reminded me of how much I love my home city for all its traditions and rich history alongside such a diverse culture of people. Being my Mum’s birthday she chose to take a trip into town with me and my Auntie to have a browse of the shops around Covent Garden and Seven Dials. This part of London brings back fond memories as somewhere I would spend lots of time being a dancer and performer. I would always find myself in the shops and cafes waiting for the next casting or audition on my schedule, so I got to seek out the best spots.

Pic00008Returning to the area following my time away there was some new places I wanted to visit alongside the old favourites. As a trending place on Instagram, Petersham Nurseries was somewhere I had to see for myself. It didn’t disappoint with it’s quaint exterior and beautiful courtyard of flowers, so we stopped by for a coffee in the deli. They had offerings of delicious baked goods, lovely salad choices and the menu for their restaurant looked fantastic too, perfect for pre-theatre.

Pic00010Having had our caffeine kick, it was time to shop and explore the streets of my old stomping ground. Towards Seven Dials we went to Dr.Martens, Brandy Melville, Urban Outfitters, Mango and the best vintage store in town, Rockit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe decided to enjoy a late lunch at Balthazar, a modern French Bistro with exquisite interiors making you feel like you’ve stepped into a restaurant in Paris. Having visited before for brunch, I was excited to try their lunch menu and wasn’t disappointed. I went for the Moules Frites which was paired perfectly with the bottle of white wine we shared for the table. They even brought out a platter of macaroons with candles for my Mum’s Birthday, how sweet!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPic00015Following our idyllic afternoon strolling around Covent Garden, we headed to the Tower of London to see the poppies being lit in commemoration of WWI. It was hauntingly beautiful watching the ex-soldiers light 10,000 torches in remembrance of those who lost their lives all that time ago in The Great War.

Edit 37To complete our day in town, I took my Mum and Auntie to Sky Garden which is at the top of the walkie talkie building in the city. With 360 degree views of the city lit up by night and a glass of wine in hand, it was the perfect setting to finish the day as a visitor back in my home city of London.

Prosecco Party; Stories Told, Memories Made

Take a group of old school friends, a few bottles of prosecco and a spread of delicious nibbles and you have yourself an evening full of giggles and fun. Coming back from the other side of the world for a few weeks, I couldn’t help but plan an evening with my favourite girls involving good food and plenty of booze!

edit-14.jpgAlways being one for a cheese board and regular customer of our local wine bar, I had to provide a platter of delicious offerings including lots of fruits, pickles, cured meats and chutneys to accompany the carefully selected array of cheese. Also known for my love of creating and consuming beautiful salads, I made a salad inspired by a recent visit to Cote Brasserie which included apple, currents, walnuts, goats cheese and a honey mustard dressing. A board of fresh french stick with oil, balsamic and basil leaves was the perfect accompaniment to complete the nibbles table.

Edit 19When originally planning the gathering, I had envisioned using my bar skills and putting together some fancy cocktails. However I was far more concerned with getting the food prepped so opted for pink sparkling and endless bottles of prosecco to quench my guest’s thirst. My mum even kindly lent us her stunning antique prosecco coupes which were the perfect prop for photos too.

Edit 21Another important component to creating the perfect setting was the music. I linked my spotify to the speakers and put on my go to chilled house music mix from Majestic Casual. Some cute fairy lights and candles made for a cosy setting around the coffee table – the girls said it looked like Christmas in there!

Edit 20I wore my new knitted jumper which I’d spotted in a little boutique in Farnham along with my favourite ruffle suede mules from Zomp Shoez in Sydney. When the girls arrived at 4pm I couldn’t wait to pop the bubbly, relax and catch up on life with my friends. It couldn’t have been a more perfect setup in which to enjoy each other’s company and soak up the time with my girls.

edit-31.jpgOf course we had planned on moving the night onto the local club in town and having started in the late afternoon, by the evening we were more than ready to let our hair down on the dance floor. This is where the night got a little more boozy as we ordered in the tequila shots and jaeger bombs! Let’s just say there were definitely some memories made and stories to be told…

Reflecting, Me Time in Mossy

The final week gearing up to my trip back to England has been exciting yet daunting nevertheless. Of course I can’t wait to see my family and catch up with friends after nearly 10 months of being away, but I can already anticipate the overwhelming pressure I will put upon myself to make the most of my time back home and fill my diary with the ongoing list of things I need to do and people I must see.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHaving finished up work here in the Southern Highlands a week prior to my flight, I’ve decided to actually relax and do those things that I enjoy before a long journey and emotional visit back to England. I took a trip to some local cafes and wineries I’ve been meaning to visit and finally found the time to sunbathe in our little garden. Cooking and cleaning has always been my way of switching off – as backwards as that sounds! – so I’ve been making some delicious dinners and my favourite breakfast bowls to enjoy too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANow it’s time to zip up my suitcase and begin the journey back to Sydney and then home. I can’t quite comprehend the amount of time that has passed but I know not much will have changed in my absence. My visit to England will fly by so I’m eager to see as many of my friends as possible and soak up being reunited with my family. On reflection, this adventure down under has changed the course of my life and I just can’t wait to get back on Australian soil and hit the ground running as I start the next chapter!

Browsing Books at Bendooley

Living in the Southern Highlands for the past 3 months, I’ve come to discover that this area is a hotspot for boutique wineries and beautiful wedding venues. Abundant with green farm land sweeping the hilly landscape, it’s no wonder the Highlands has become such a sought after destination for a weekend city break or countryside wedding, especially with it only being a short drive from both Sydney and Canberra.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWorking at one of the wineries myself, I have been keen to visit other popular venues including Centennial Vineyard just out of Bowral and Bendooley Estate in Berrima. I was particularly intrigued by the idea of a bookshop at Bendooley which welcomes guests to enjoy their menu of enticing Australian cuisine whilst perusing the literature.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAArriving at the estate on a drizzly spring Friday afternoon, I was welcomed by the site of a roaring fire to escape the cold. In the main cafe seating area nestled between the shelves of books, it’s hard not to get drawn in and immersed into an interesting read. Stocking everything from original English fiction and old school cooking books to current cult classics and eye catching coffee table hard backs, you could spend hours discovering new reads whilst sipping on your wine and enjoying a slice of pizza fresh from the stone oven.

Edit 5_FotorOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Having exercised my intellect and admired the photography of Vogue covers and Hepburn films, I eagerly followed signs to the cellar door. Overlooking the vineyard and grand driveway, the stunning bar and old-fashioned counterweight fireplace provides the eye-catching centrepiece as you contemplate the tasting notes from the range of wines on offer.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAStarting with white, I was refreshed with a crisp fruity Sauvignon Blanc and found the woody zest of the Semillon a real winner. Of course I had to try the sparkling too and being my personal preference, the NV Cuvee didn’t disappoint with a delicate fruity finish perfect for a summer afternoon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMoving onto the reds and with a good variety of light, woody and heavier types, there certainly was a taste for every palette. The Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of dark fruits and a medium body was exquisite and the Sangiovese giving more spice and bite would accompany a cheese board perfectly. Being more partial to a full bodied red, I didn’t expect such depth of flavour in the Pinot Noir which time in French Oak leaves a delicious woody finish.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWith staff as friendly and welcoming as its surroundings, Bendooley Estate offers an all round experience of casual fine dining, sociable chatter of wine tasting and book browsing at leisure…a beautiful recipe for the quintessential afternoon in Berrima.

Wholesome Bowls the Minimalist Method

When it comes to creating wholesome meals which feed the eyes as much as they nourish the body, it’s easy to be mislead by popular bloggers and Instagramers promoting the latest health food fad. In reality there’s no need to seek out these expensive superfoods when our grocery stores and local markets provide the best fresh produce on our doorstep at a fraction of the price. Living here in Australia away from the luxury of my mum’s well stocked kitchen cupboards, I’ve learnt to keep it more simple and take things back to basics.

Edit 2 (1)For brekky or a snack anytime of the day, you can’t go wrong with a classic yoghurt bowl.  Take a dollop of Greek set yoghurt, frozen berries warmed in a little water, pear slices baked in honey, a crunchy granola laden with nuts and a generous dash of cinnamon – simple, fast and cheap. Baking the pears turns their flesh into golden sweetness and with the crunch of granola on top of the fruit, this combination is like a healthy take on crumble desert!

Edit 1A night in cooking for myself means taking what odds and ends I have leftover and getting creative with the flavours I can put together. This colourful bowl of goodness was a mix of salad, paprika roasted veggies including cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, onion and whole garlic cloves, fajita quorn strips, sticky white rice, sprouts, pepitas, a squeeze of lemon and that all important drizzle of hot sauce. The addition of pineapple wedges and touch of paprika on the veggies complimented the Mexican theme and really vamped up this dinner.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOnce again oats prove to be the most economical of wholesome ingredients and provide endless possibilities with all the different cooking methods. I most often use rolled oats and choose to cook on the stovetop, however I baked this bowl of oatmeal in the oven to achieve a super creamy consistency. No need for fancy powders or seed mixes, simply take a cup of rolled oats, a cup of soy milk, a cup of water, mix together in a bowl and leave in the oven for 25 minutes or so. I stirred in grated apple half way through and left to stand for 10 minutes before topping with warmed berries and cinnamon. I’ve experimented a lot with methods for cooking oats and lavish toppings to decorate, but this basic recipe was perfect and just as worthy of a photo. I enjoyed my bowl sat in the garden soaking up the first few rays of Australian spring; sometimes its the simple pleasures that warm the soul.
