Lavender Bay Dinner Party: Visa Grant Celebrations!

Finally… my second year visa here in Oz has been granted following almost two months waiting for it all to go through. I’ve been in a bit of a limbo until now with the prospect of it possibly not getting accepted. So this was a fitting cause for celebration and occasion to invite my family over for a dinner party in my new home of Lavender Bay.

Edit 1.jpgIt may have been a Tuesday evening, but with my sister in town and my visa confirmation, it was more than necessary to pop the bubbly!

Edit 4My fabulous chef land lady who is a family friend put the evening together and did a marvellous job of prepping and serving a delicious dinner. It was a treat to have the dining table laid as I often sit out on the balcony with my dinner.

Edit 2We were treated to a one dish delight of chicken thighs, sweet potato, beetroot and spinach drizzled with lemon mint jus and sprinkled with hazelnuts.

Edit 5What a way to officially welcome in my second year in Sydney by hosting my family to a dinner party in this gorgeous home of Lavender Bay.

 

Bondi Sundaze

It was inevitable, I simply had to give my sister a taste of the famous Bondi ‘Sunday Sesh’. Whilst this usually involves a few arvo drinks which turns into a night out at the beach bars, we opted for the chilled vibes as we’d had our quota of vino the day prior on our winery tour!

Edit 97.jpgEdit 5Hitting the beach at midday, it was buzzing and the bars were already pumping their tunes setting that feel-good Bondi weekend atmosphere. We found a spot on the beach and enjoyed a couple hours sunbathing whilst having some quality sister girl talk time.

Edit 6.jpgWith Bloody Mary’s on our minds following my Uncle’s suggestion for fixing our sore heads, we hit Bucketlist for arvo drinks. This spot right in the centre of Bondi beach is the perfect place for people watching that infamous strip along the front.

Edit 7.jpgEdit 92.jpgAfter a stroll around the boutique shops and vintage stores we visited Bondi Hardware,  a hidden gem in the neighbourhood of Bondi serving top cocktails and delicious tapas, including a scrumptious chipotle manchego charred corn dish.

Edit 11.jpgEdit 9.jpgI opted for an iced coffee given my delicate head and my sister enjoyed a glass of Rose. Live acoustic music set the tone for an easygoing evening as we sat on the benches outside at golden hour surrounded by the hum of Bondi Sundaze.

Southern Highlands Escape

As a large part of my life so far here in Oz, I had to take my sister to the Southern Highlands where I completed my farm work for another year visa. We visited the Farm Club for a spot of lunch, before touring my favourite wineries and finishing the day hosting a BBQ with some amazing friends I’ve made along my journey.

Pic02076.jpgPic00004.jpgFirst up on our vineyard tour we went to Mount Ashby Estate to soak up the authentic French terrace setting and catch up with the lovely owners who I used to work for. After tasting the beautiful wines, we purchased 2 bottles of their deliciously refreshing Rose as gifts.

Edit 4Next we stopped by Bendooley Estate where the cellar door showcases a stunning feature fireplace on a cog system overlooking the picturesque fields of grapes. After an insightful discussion of the wines as we tasted the wide range on offer, we got a bottle of Reisling and Sauvignon Blanc as more gifts – I promise! 😉

Edit 5Popping via Coles on our way home, we grabbed food for the BBQ and got back to get prepping. I made a trio of salads including Greek feta, sweet chilli carrot zucchini noodles and a simple green leaf avo salad to accompany burgers, sausages & charred corn.

Edit 2Everyone enjoyed the evening sun as we chatted by the pool and got the feast prepped. It was the perfect end to an idyllic day in the scenic Southern Highlands showing my sister the area I called home for five months, and still continue to escape to when I need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

 

Twilight Tingles & Rose Feels

With my sister in town for a couple of weeks, we kicked celebrations off in true style with post work drinks at some of my favourite spots in Sydney. Starting in Barangaroo at Bungalow 8, we got going English fashion with a jug of Pimms!

Edit 16.jpgHeading down to The Rocks, we passed via the Luna Markets where the back streets were decorated with hundreds of beautiful Chinese lanterns.

Edit 1Edit 4As the sun was setting and a picturesque pink hue was settling over the harbour, we stopped by The Glenmore rooftop. I couldn’t think of a more fitting spot to enjoy a glass of rose with an out of towner than overlooking the harbour bridge and opera house set against the stunning Sydney skyline.

Edit 7Edit 5A few cocktails and vinos down and we were ready for some dinner! After showing my sister my new pad in Lavender Bay, we popped around the corner to a fantastic Spanish tapas bar called Delicado Foods. With wine served in suitably large glasses and an extensive menu of authentic tapas, this local favourite on a modest corner of Blues Point Road felt like we were in the middle of Europe.

Edit 48.jpgWe ordered a spread of potatas braves, halloumi mushrooms, spicy chorizo and salad before treating ourselves to desert of churros and Affogato Amaretto (naughty but necessary). A truly memorable evening spent with my sis showing her the sweet Sydney life as we soaked up those twilight tingles sipping our rose.

Salty Bondi Beach Days

What a way to spend a Sunday catching up with a girlfriend, lying on the white sand beach and finally trying Bondi’s local favourite for a quick acai bowl fix. Whilst some people may find the busy beach scene all too much, I can’t get enough of visiting Bondi on the weekends during summer to soak up the atmosphere and try out the next trending cafe for brunch or arvo cocktails. Edit 1Edit 3After sun baking for a couple of hours, I couldn’t think of anything more suitable to cool me down than a hearty bowl of acai. As primarily a fresh grocer store, Fruitologist also has a smoothie bar open all day churning out mouth-watering delights. So finally leaving the beach at 4pm, I headed straight there and ordered the classic acai topped with granola, strawberries, watermelon and added extra pb.

Edit 9Served heaped over the top of the pot with a generous helping of granola and lashings of pb, my cravings for a refreshing bowl of sweetness were well satisfied. At only $12 per bowl and open until 7pm on weekdays, I know exactly where to visit when I need a quick bowl for the road or to grab and enjoy down the beach.

 

Simple Saturdays

Just winding down after another busy week at work meeting various deadlines as well as hosting and attending lots of events. As an assistant in PR, my job involves a lot of planning and organising for events, an area I love to get involved in as it’s an opportunity to collaborate creatively with others and utilise my skills in managing and hosting.

Edit 1.jpgSo when it comes to the weekend, sometimes there’s nothing better than taking time out to enjoy simple pleasures. I never have chance to make my favourite bowl of oats during the work week, so for Saturday brunch I indulge in a beautiful bowlful packed with plenty of fruit, cinnamon & nut butter. My current preferred choice is Almond Pistachio Butter by the 99th Monkey, a Melbourne brand which uses only natural products to create a range of yummy spread combos.

Edit 2.jpgGetting in my loungewear and in direct line of the air-con (it’s over 30 degrees here in Oz at the moment!), I settle in for the night in front of Graham Norton with a glass of vino. How lucky I am to be living in such a beautiful home too amongst the art and eclectic interiors. Cheers to the weekend wind-down from Lavender Bay ❤

Sydney Eats: Celsius Cafe Kirribilli

Floating on the jetty at Kirribilli wharf serving exquisitely presented brunch delights, Celsius was top of my list of places to try on my move over to North Sydney. Edit 27.jpgArriving at midday on Australia Day, the cafe was bustling and there was a little wait for a table. Finally we bagged our spot on a bench right by the window with prime view of the harbour and clear blue water splashing on the rocks right by our feet.

Edit 29Edit 34.jpgI ordered my classic long black with a dash of hot milk and for brekky I chose the granola bowl served with soy soaked chia, mango, berries and edible flowers. Exquisite presentation and delicious flavour combos matched with top coffee, I left well fed and ready for my birthday celebrations!

Edit 31.jpgEdit 32.jpgI would be keen to return to try another one of their tempting all day breakfast combos which initially drew me in on their popular Instagram feed. Celsius certainly serves up all the goods with a varied food menu for all tastes and perfect coffee to match the dreamy location.

 

Sydney Festival at Carriageworks

With distinctive nineteenth century industrial interior retained from its former use as a rail yard, Carriageworks in Redfern is the most influential, contemporary multi-arts centre of its kind in Australia. So during Sydney Festival with events being held throughout the city, artist Nick Cave put on an exhibition here alongside a pop up theatre and restaurant Cosecha. It seemed the perfect time to checkout this notorious arts space which is also home to the famous weekly Saturday farmers market and some of Sydney’s biggest club nights.

edit 1Meeting my friend after work, we browsed the beautiful exhibition before stopping off for a glass (or two) of wine. I was in awe of the use of space as the beautiful art on display was such a contrast juxtapose to the raw, cumbersome interiors of this ancient building.

Edit 4.jpgThe Crystal Cloudscape built from thousands of sparkling chandeliers was exquisite and the eye-catching hanging metallic mobiles twinkled majestically against the exposed brickwork. However these hold a deeper meaning as on closer inspection they contain shapes of a teardrop, bullet or gun to symbolise the polarising gun occupancy prevalent in American culture today.

edit 3We then spent the evening winding down over some delicious Spanish tapas and a few glasses of Pinot Gris. We were treated to a pear parmesan rocket salad and polenta chips courtesy of my lovely landlady who is the head chef at Cosecha and finished the night with a little cheese board.

Edit 6.jpgAs an arts and culture hub, this space at Carriageworks attracts a variety of eclectic people to create a buzzing, friendly atmosphere welcome to anyone and everyone. I certainly can’t think of a better way to spend my hump day evening!

Byron Eats: Combi Acai

My motto when I reach a any new destination is first and foremost, find the best brekky in town by scanning the trending spots on Instagram or Pinterest. So being a beachside town known for its health food cafes feeding the bellies of those Aussie beach bums showcasing their washboard abs, I was keen to scope out Byron’s best answer to my Acai cravings.

combiArriving on NYE afternoon, everywhere was packed out and we were lucky to grab a table in the most happening place in town for a healthy lunch. Combi cafe was top of my list for getting the best all-day brekky with its extensive menu including a vast selection of Acai and superfood bowls, not to mention the cool bohemian interiors which eco simple Scandinavian style to create a relaxed, laid back atmosphere.

Edit 5.jpgI ordered the classic Acai Bowl blended with house made nut mylk topped with banana coins, apple, berries, coconut flakes and a hidden base of crunchy activated caramelized burkini bites, whilst my boyfriend enjoyed his bowl laden with cacao nibs and peanut butter (which I had to take a spoonful of!). Our bowls came in good time with friendly service too, something I could really appreciate as the staff were clearly working hard to meet the demands of a packed out bank holiday lunch rush.

Edit 6.jpgCoffee was on point too, served in stunning blue crockery to match the beachy theme of coconut shell bowls and food served on rustic wooden boards. With potted palms and living herbs on the kitchen bench to bring the outside air in, alongside a seventies inspired pastel colour pallette and exposed plumbing fixtures, the overall ambiance is contemporary and cool yet cosy and homely.

Founded upon the principle that eating well can be just as delicious and exciting, Combi uses only organic, locally sourced ingredients to offer a menu of enticing raw treats and eats which are nourishing for both the body and soul. If you’re stopping off in Byron Bay anytime soon, I would encourage you to visit Combi not only to sample the best in superfood, but to dine al fresco and soak up that salty sea air whilst rubbing shoulders with the eclectic mix of Byron locals.

 

Byron and Beyond: New Years Road Trip

When you think of the typical Aussie surfers paradise with an eclectic mix of locals from all corners of the world seeking sun, sea, arts, culture, music, food and a buzzing social scene all in one place, Byron is the number one destination. So with some time on our hands over the holidays and somewhere I had on my bucket list to visit, we decided to take a road trip up the north coast to spend New Years in the bohemian town of Byron and explore some hidden gems on our way back.

pic00002Packing up the Defender and our little boat complete with a nifty camping setup, we hit the road a day before NYE and covered some good distance on our first leg up the coast from Sydney. Making it all the way to Sawtell by dusk, we were about to get some groceries and park up for the night, when my boyfriend spotted an old friend who lives in town. He invited us to stay the night, so we brought in some cheeses, meats, dips, bread and wine to graze on as the boys had a catch up and reminisced on old times.

pic00001The next day was NYE so we got going in the early morning with the view of buying last minute tickets to Falls Festival. We didn’t reach Byron until gone 1pm, so instead we decided to make the most of our final day in 2018 and spend the evening in town soaking up the atmosphere. Following cocktails at the Beach Hotel, we found a perfect spot on the headland just out of central Byron to park up and camp for the night.

pic00003A quick freshen up and a few vinos sat on top the Defender and we were ready for our NYE in Byron Bay. We stumbled across a fab spot for dinner at Miss Margarita overlooking the beachfront as we sipped prosecco and devoured our Mexican feast of chipotle chicken nachos and fish burritos. The town was alive and so much going on, from jams on the beach to night markets where I bought a Snowflake of Obsidian gemstone anklet meant to balance the body, mind and spirit – just what I need for a fresh start in the new year! Following the countdown on Byron Beach, we danced the night away at a local pub The Great Northerner and ended celebrations with a stunning moonlit walk up the beach to where we were camping.

pic00004pic00006New Years day and our delicate heads were fixed with a dip in the lagoon and morning of mooching the boutique shops of Byron. Before leaving, we also visited The Farm with its popular cafe and restaurant on site run by the founders of hatted restaurant Three Blue Ducks in Sydney. Here we enjoyed a much needed coffee and spot of brunch overlooking the sunflower fields before another long leg on the road. It was a busy time of year with the holidays in full swing, so I would be keen to visit another time to experience the true free-spirited local vibes of hippie Byron Bay.

pic00008Pic00072.jpgEnding up back in Sawtell where we had initially scoped out a good spot to camp by the river, we launched the boat late afternoon and got fishing as the sun went down at golden hour. With a quiet river to ourselves, tunes playing in the background and a glass of vino in hand, it was the most blissful way to welcome in the first day of 2019. Our setup for the night was just perfect too, with a makeshift kitchen laid out on the grass and boat back on dry land set up with the bed ready to fall into after dinner. I made the most of what we had as shops had closed early on the bank holiday, even having to use tin foil for makeshift plates! I put together some bruschetta with cucumber, tomato and lemon for starters before steaming some broccoli and corn to accompany our little white fish from the days catch – modest yet so tasty.

pic00012pic00014After a morning dip, we ventured into the quaint old town of Bellingen to have a coffee in the trendy cafe/shop Hyde and later lunch at No 5 Church Street. I would highly recommend this hidden spot on a quiet side street for food in Bellingen with its quirky interiors and menu to suit all tastes. I opted for a delicious pumpkin feta salad and my boyfriend raved about the chicken burger and ‘best chips’ he’d ever had! Bellies full we visited the Promised Lands just out of town for an afternoon swim and more fishing. This is a truly stunning area of natural beauty with a fresh water stream running through the heart of the woodlands and large plunge pools for taking a dip.

Pic01297.jpgOur final night of cooking beneath the stars, we polished off our wine supply whilst discussing our hopes and plans for the year ahead. It was certainly a journey of prosperity and growth for me here in Oz and now I find myself diving head first into a second year here! I could never have dreamed what this adventure had in store for me and the happiness it would bring along with it, so I intend to go forward with an open mind and ready to embrace the opportunities 2019 has to offer…’Dare to go beyond your wildest dreams and your true potential will follow.’
