Sydney Eats: Burnt Orange Mosman

Living North of the bridge, I’m keen to discover some more good spots for the beloved Aussie brekky and good cup of coffee. This Sunday my friend took me to a hidden gem of the North shore which he claims to be the best cafe in Sydney!

Edit 1.JPGBurnt Orange in Mosman is a boutique restaurant which was the original Clubhouse for Mosman Golf Course. Built in 1920, this historic space boasts stunning harbour views from the unique wrap around terrace overlooking Middle Head. With its chic interiors and classic white wood furniture, this homely cafe echoes its exclusive member’s Clubhouse beginnings.

Edit 2.JPGArriving on a late Sunday morning, we just made it in time for the breakfast menu. With an extensive offering of brekky delights, it was hard to choose! I decided to have the toasted muesli served with coconut yoghurt, passionfruit, seasonal berries and a very fitting caramelised ‘burnt’ orange slice. The fruit was perfectly fresh and each dish exquisitely presented.

Edit 4.JPGFor coffee I had my usual cup of long black, but I didn’t even need to add the milk – that’s when you know the coffee is extra special! Service was quick and staff were very friendly and attentive making us feel well looked after.

Edit 3.JPGBeing in such a unique spot off the beaten track, Burnt Orange certainly feels more special and exclusive than the everyday cafe. With a bustling atmosphere, delicious menu and boutique interiors to match, I will certainly be putting it up there as one of my favourite cafes in Sydney too. I’ve already eyed up the High Tea menu for my next visit, but may have to go back in the meantime just to enjoy another one of those coffees whilst having a browse of the niche cookbooks for sale.

Merivale Madness

It’s winter in Sydney and getting those Aussies out when the temperature drops below 15 degrees can be a challenge! However with the cold month of June rolling around, once again Merivale bars across the city are offering 49% off any drink 5-7pm all week.

DdXVXu2VQAAk9CWWith this in mind, I popped a date in the diary for our admin and finance team to go and lap up the cheap drinks following another busy week at work. This Friday evening we left the office to meet at Palings, one of the Merivale bars which is part of The Ivy complex just off of George street.

Pic03876.jpgOf course the bar was heaving as everyone scrambled to get their drinks in before the bell, many of us finding ourselves double parked! Being one of the most popular CBD bars for city workers, there was a bustling atmosphere which made for a fun night out with my colleagues. Cheers Merivale!

Event Planning: Work Hard Play Hard

Last week I got to see my hard work pay off as we hosted the quarterly year agency social at my office. After a month of planning and pulling together the team to organise our event, I was thrilled with how the evening went down. Taking inspiration from a traditional pub complete with a professional MC trivia host, we promised the agency a night of beer and burger fuelled tomfoolery!

Edit 2As my first time co-ordinating an event, I learnt a lot in the process of organising through to executing a large party of this kind. Whilst I had the support of my team and delegated tasks to even the workload, there were a number of hurdles along the way. With a tight budget and over 50 employees to keep happy, we had to make cuts where we could. Consequently we decided to hold the event at our offices where we have a balcony on which the marquee was assembled. Once the tables were dressed and fairy lights were up, the setting was perfect and meant people only had to walk upstairs from their desks to join the party.

Edit 3After a hectic day of running around overseeing preparations and ensuring everything was in place, that first sip of bubbles was bliss and an absolute relief to finally be enjoying the evening myself. Everyone was so complementary of my efforts and following all the excitement of the trivia, celebrations and antics continued late into the night.

Edit 8Of course there were little touches such as the table layouts and presentation of food which I would’ve liked to have been more thought out. However with the budget and time frame we had to achieve all of this, I was over the moon with our success.

Edit 6Most importantly I learnt a lot from the experience and found the pleasure of seeing everyone enjoy the occasion even more rewarding… pass me the prosecco and cue the wobbly eyes 😉

Easter Feasting with Family and Friends

And so another public holiday rolls around bringing with it an extra long four day weekend…cue a marathon of festivities with family and friends enjoying far too much wine and copious amounts of food!

Edit 1.jpgKicking things off in the office, we hosted an Easter themed morning tea with a spread of hot cross buns, hundreds of chocolate eggs and the obligatory mimosas. I was surprised to see alternative hot cross buns flavoured with apple and cinnamon or chocolate chip – I prefer the classic English style packed with juicy fruits, popped in the toaster and covered in lashings of strawberry jam.

Edit 2.jpgOn Good Friday I was invited to the family BBQ in Maroubra where my in-laws treated us to an afternoon and evening packed full of food. As one of the entres, I helped my cousin bake the cob loaf which is a dish definitely not for the faint hearted! Made by hollowing out the centre of the bread and then pouring a mixture of mozzarella, cream cheese, spinach and seasoning inside, the cob is baked in the oven to melt the cheese and crisp up the removed bread pieces for dipping. The result is the most irresistible, mouth-watering pool of cheese perfect for dunking bread, crackers or even veg sticks. Once the cheese was all finished, it was time to break open the remains of the crust which had soaked up all that tasty filling.

Edit 4.jpgAs Catholics they traditionally don’t eat meat on Good Friday, so the theme of the night was seafood. First up were tiger prawns so fresh that they were a deep red in colour and only needed a squeeze of lemon to compliment the flavours. Onto the BBQ and the octopus was expertly seared in a light sauce. I think this was some of the best octopus I’ve ever had as it can be easy to overcook and turn chewy, but this meat was deliciously succulent.

Edit 4.jpgFinally sitting down to the beautifully laid dinner table, first course was mussels. These were cooked simply in a tomato marinara sauce to let the taste of the scrumptious mussels come through.

Edit 6.jpgMain course was salmon seared on the BBQ to achieve that crispy skin. Everyone made their contribution of sides including exquisite salads and even a creamy, golden potato bake which I simply couldn’t resist.

Edit 8.jpgTo finish off this indulgent evening of sensational food, my uncle served up his famous homemade lemon cheesecake topped with raspberries and whipped cream. Just when I thought I couldn’t fit another bite in, I proceeded to have almost three slices of the cake! This was the perfect end to a truly exceptional night of food which I don’t regret a minute of. I am truly thankful for my family’s hospitality and the unforgettable Easter feast we shared together.

Kirribilli Markets

Beneath the tracks of Milson’s Point railway, nestled in the foot of the harbour bridge, Kirribilli Markets attract hundreds of vendors twice a month since it first opened in 1976. An eclectic mix of fine arts and handmade wares juxtapose the bric-a-brac and second hand jumble yard of clothes up for grabs on the backyard of Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre.

Edit 5.jpgAs the tunnel fills with a maze of stalls, the good vibes weekend atmosphere echoes amongst the hustle and bustle of Kirribilli streets.

Edit 12.jpgWhilst the sun beats down and eager shoppers feel the heat, the cluster of fresh drink and food stands provide gourmet offerings from numerous cuisines.

Edit 6.jpgOut on the green spills the recycled fashion stalls where vendors eagerly sell off clothing for a fraction of their worth. If you’re lucky (and patient enough to have a good route in the bargain bins), you’ll find yourself walking away with barely worn designer pieces for as little as $5!

Edit 8.jpgChatting with the friendly sellers, there’s also opportunity to practice your haggling skills and negotiate a good price. With a modest changing room setup behind the park shed, you can even try before you buy.

Edit 9.jpgI was excited to see if these Wrangler shorts would fit but unfortunately they were a little too big – I’m still on the hunt for those perfect bum hugging vintage denim Levis!

Edit 10.jpgThis delicate jewellery is very similar to a stall at Paddington Markets where I recently purchased my new favourite ring. I can’t get enough of stacking fine gold rings, so I’m keen to build my collection with these hand-made, good quality designs which are so unique.

Edit 3.jpgI would highly recommend visiting Kirribilli Markets not only for the one-of-a-kind bargains you can bag, but to take a stroll in this North Sydney local neighbourhood and soak up that infectious Sunday ambience.

Sydney Eats: Zushi Barangaroo

This week I was lucky enough to sample another one of Sydney’s top rated restaurants, Zushi. As one of the newbies at the PR firm, our CEO kindly treated a group of us to a working lunch down at Barangaroo wharf. Arriving at midday, we ordered in a few bottles of refreshing French rose wine ready for our 5 course tasting menu feast.

Edit 1.jpgTo start we were presented with beautifully plated ocean trout carpaccio followed by a selection of chefs sashimi. The combination of sweet berries with tangy radish was delicious and the fresh fish only needed a dash of soy to bring out the flavours.

Edit 2.jpgNext it was onto the sushi course and as a group we opted for the seafood rainbow roll. This colourful arrangement included my favourite combo of avocado, salmon and prawns wrapped in sticky sushi rice.

Edit 3.jpgCourse number 4 was honey mayo glazed prawns topped with black sesame seeds. These meaty king prawns were served in a light batter drizzled in hot sticky honey, a little messy but irresistibly tasty.

Edit 4.jpgThe main and final course was oven roast salmon fillet in dill served with quinoa, watercress salsa verde and grilled cos lettuce. I can’t get enough of dill with salmon, but the salsa verde gave a delightful spin on the flavour whilst the lettuce added extra crunch.

Edit 5.jpgAs a lighter lunch option, this 5 course tasting menu is perfect for getting a good overview of the food on offer. From freshly caught sashimi to exquisitely arranged Japanese specials, I would be keen to visit Zushi again to try more of their delectable dishes, paired with another fine wine from their extensive list.

Mardis Gras 19: Grecian Glitter Girls

As one of Sydney’s biggest celebrations of the year otherwise known as ‘Gay Christmas’, Mardis Gras is always a highly anticipated event across the city. Following last year’s unforgettable introduction to the famous day with it being the year of legalised gay marriage, I couldn’t wait for another round of glitter and giggles at the girls only party.

Edit 2.jpgDecorated with all the sparkle and colour you could imagine, our lovely friend hosted the most fabulous party as her Birthday also falls on this day. I was very excited to be back in my favourite hanging cosy seat complete with sequins and a disco mirror ball – my very own throne!

Edit 6.jpgEdit 7.jpgThis time last year (as a newbie to Australia) I was also introduced to the Ozzy Birthday party staple Fairybread. I was addicted to this simple combo of white bread, butter and sprinkles, so I knew exactly where I was going to get my sugar hit ready to dance the night away again.

Edit 9.jpgAnother Mardis Gras down and I feel truly thankful for the beautiful friends that have made me so welcome and embraced my presence on such a special day for the gay community. Happy Mardis Gras ❤

Doltone House Event Showcase

Working for one of Sydney’s most successful PR companies, as Office Assistant I’m frequently delegated the task of planning and organising events. So when we were invited to this year’s Doltone House Business Showcase, my manager and I were keen to see what they had to offer – and how could we turn down an evening of complimentary drinks and food!?

Edit 12Founded in 1954 at Pyrmont wharf by Biaggo Signorelli, the Doltone House legacy has become Sydney’s most influential hospitality establishments. From intimate cocktail parties to weddings and large scale business events, their ever growing venue collection offers a variety of options to suit every occasion.

Pic00001Starting at Jone’s Bay Wharf in Pyrmont, we kicked things off with sliders and ciders; a pear cider to match the spiced lentil patty and an apple cider to compliment the pulled pork mini burger. We started strong and how we meant to go on!

Edit 2We were then shown onto the next space up on the rooftop where we were greeted with refreshing ice cold Chandon. With a large terrace overlooking the harbour bridge, The Loft was one of my favourite venues with exposed beams and 3 split levels to create a unique layout.

Edit 4.jpgNext we were shown around the contemporary SoHo room and bar with trendy interiors including an antler lamp shade, bookcases and old school leather couches. This English period style reflects cool downtown New York vibes, perfect for hosting a more intimate cocktail or birthday party.

Edit 5.jpgEdit 6.jpgVenue number 4 was a short walk down the road where we were shown the fun activities which could add something different to your event. The group was split up to do either table arrangements, arancini ball making or a gin masterclass which we were lucky enough to participate in! We had a laugh shaking our cocktails and enjoyed our G&Ts paired with the delicious arancini fresh from the oven.

Edit 8.jpgEdit 11.jpgThe final destination was Hyde Park House and it certainly didn’t disappoint. After walking through the opulent entrance with twinkling chandeliers, we were taken to the large function room overlooking the park which had been turned into a Christmas Party! A Mimosa in hand and live jazz band playing festive tunes, we got stuck in decorating our Gingerbread men, how fun!

Edit 13.jpgEdit 15.jpgOver at the bar we were served lychee blinis and spoilt with homemade sticky toffee pudding pots. We certainly had been treated with lots of drinks and delicious food we couldn’t say no to.

Edit 19.jpgTo finish the evening we had our makeup touched up for the LinkedIn headshot. I would’ve preferred to have this taken at the beginning before I had consumed such a mix of drinks…but the gin made me grin 😀Edit 20.jpgWe were truly looked after all evening and given a unique overview of some of the fabulous venues Doltone House has to offer. Not only do they provide a stunning space to match your needs, but they can tailer every detail of the catering, drinks and activities to suit your requirements and host a seamless event delivered with class and style.

Sydney Eats: Cafe Fiveways

As my old stomping ground, I would always wonder the trendy streets of the Paddington neighbourhood to seek out the best cafes, bars and restaurants in the most happening area of town. Having visited the famous Fiveways crossroads many times, I was curious to try out somewhere I hadn’t been before.

Edit 1.jpgEdit 7.jpgOpen from 6am for brekky through until dinner time, Cafe Fiveways offers an all day menu with daily specials too. Arriving in the late afternoon following a stroll around the Paddington Markets, my sister and I found an idyllic spot to bask in the sun on this picturesque corner of Paddo.

Pic00015.jpgI was impressed with the varied menu on offer and fantastic lunch specials at such good value too – a scrumptious looking acai bowl with all the toppings for $15, a tempting chargrilled octopus dish and even rump steak, chips and salad for only $14!

Edit 8.jpgEdit 9.jpgWe opted for the mezze board for $16 piled high with my favourite roasted veggies, olives, pickles, humous and speciality bread, plenty to share between two. It seems this independent cafe has nailed the simple need for offering delicious, beautifully presented food at a reasonable price alongside friendly service.

Edit 2.jpgThey even had melon water which was so refreshing and much needed after a day of shopping. It was the perfect Saturday afternoon sat in Fiveways soaking up the weekend atmosphere, and I will definitely be returning to Cafe Fiveways again soon to sample one of their appetizing daily specials whilst people watching this quaint corner of Paddo.

Valentines Sister Picnic <3

What could be more romantic than grabbing a picnic and bottle of bubbly before watching the sunset over Sydney from the best spot in town. With Wendy Whitley’s ‘Secret Garden’ right on my doorstep boasting the most iconic views of the harbour bridge, opera house and the CBD skyline all in one, a Valentines picnic seemed the obvious occasion.Edit 2.jpgMaking it down to the front by dusk, the glistening lights of the city and nearby Luna Park were already twinkling upon the harbour. After a long wait for a pizza at the local Blues Point Gourmet Pizza (this place does the best Italian in town!), we were lucky to find a spot with uninterrupted views as we found ourselves surrounded by couples!

Edit 3.jpgIt seems everyone had the same idea for a Valentines date to remember, but I certainly can’t think of anywhere I would’ve rather been than with my sister enjoying a glass of bubbles, toasting to her special trip here in Sydney…love you sis ❤
