Finding the Key to Happiness
With all of its ups and downs and unexpected plot twists, life is never going to be straight forward or easy. Maintaining happiness throughout this rollercoaster is something we all strive for and seems to be the most simple thing, yet it can be so hard to achieve when we’re constantly confined to the pressures and expectations of everyday life.
Listening to the podcast series The Highest Self with Sahara Rose, my eyes have been opened to the sad fact that we are all sucked into this whirlwind of modern life where we continue to push our boundries to reach such demanding expectations. Instead of feeling content and happy in the moments of greatness we do reach, we find ourselves moving the goal posts once again to battle on before setting the next target. Why is it we cut short that feeling of contentment and joy when things are simply just fine and life is all OK?
Sahara Rose asks us to take a moment and think back 5 or even 10 years ago to reflect on just how far we have come. What we find is that every one of us is on a journey of growth and we are achieving wonderful things in that fact alone. I spent a weekend with my lovely Manager and close friend who has helped me to see the amazing things I’ve already accomplished at work and in my personal life. After our Sunday morning brekky date, we went for a beautiful bush walk to wind down, breath in the fresh air and just appreciate where we find ourselves at this point of our lives.
‘The happiest people in life are those who are grateful for where they are now; living life in the present moment is true contentment.’
With daylight savings now meaning the sunsets around 5:30pm, pastel colours paint the sky and splash the harbour with that majestic haze each evening I walk home. This sight never fails to make me smile and feel so grateful for being right where I am in life at this moment in time; Sydney, you stole my heart ❤

Hitting the beach at midday, it was buzzing and the bars were already pumping their tunes setting that feel-good Bondi weekend atmosphere. We found a spot on the beach and enjoyed a couple hours sunbathing whilst having some quality sister girl talk time.
With Bloody Mary’s on our minds following my Uncle’s suggestion for fixing our sore heads, we hit Bucketlist for arvo drinks. This spot right in the centre of Bondi beach is the perfect place for people watching that infamous strip along the front.
After a stroll around the boutique shops and vintage stores we visited Bondi Hardware, a hidden gem in the neighbourhood of Bondi serving top cocktails and delicious tapas, including a scrumptious chipotle manchego charred corn dish.
I opted for an iced coffee given my delicate head and my sister enjoyed a glass of Rose. Live acoustic music set the tone for an easygoing evening as we sat on the benches outside at golden hour surrounded by the hum of Bondi Sundaze.
We met with some family friends who also own a handsome ‘Malibu’ boat and got going on the water by 8:30am. It was a beautiful summer day with a light breeze to cool the air. With the tunes pumping and sun glistening on the water, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my morning.
It was a great opportunity to test run my boyfriend’s new stunning little boat which he got for a bargain on Gumtree recently. We made a stop at a little beach where we could pull the boat up and jump off a cliff before having a swim in the gorgeous clear water. I even got to try my hand at waterskiing for the first time which is a lot harder than it looks! My boyfriend then showed me how its done as he showed off his stylish moves on the wakeboard.
Following our morning on the water, we hit the beach and cracked open the only Aussie drink necessary for Boxing Day, Victoria Bitter beers! It was a dreamy afternoon laying on the beach with friends sipping our VBs, feeling like we had truly seized the day with our morning of fun on the river and the entire afternoon and evening still ahead of us to enjoy…’Carpe Diem!’
Being an acai bowl addict, I strolled down the road to Surry Hills where Bare Naked Bowls has opened another cafe. Serving every kind of acai bowl with toppings galore and health drink blend you can imagine, this place is my idea of heaven. Arriving in the late afternoon on a Saturday, I managed to grab a little table overlooking the bustling neighbourhood corner of Surry Hills.
After much consideration over the delectable choice of blends and toppings on offer I chose the Hippie Bowl, a blend of organic acai berry, banana, blueberry, organic hemp protein and macadamia milk with a topping of handmade nut granola, banana, goji berry, strawberries, blueberries, organic hemp seeds and natural peanut butter drizzle. I asked to swap the hemp seeds for coconut chips to complete what I believed to be the perfect combo; creamy sweet acai paired with crunchy granola, chewy gojis and morish peanut butter.
Coming in at $16 per bowl, it was worth the price given the generous portion size and immaculate Instagramable presentation alongside friendly service. I can’t wait to return to try another one of the inticing bowl combos at their other stores in both Manly and Bronte; here’s to those hot summer days munching on a cooling bowl of delicious acai by the beach.

For brekky or a snack anytime of the day, you can’t go wrong with a classic yoghurt bowl. Take a dollop of Greek set yoghurt, frozen berries warmed in a little water, pear slices baked in honey, a crunchy granola laden with nuts and a generous dash of cinnamon – simple, fast and cheap. Baking the pears turns their flesh into golden sweetness and with the crunch of granola on top of the fruit, this combination is like a healthy take on crumble desert!
A night in cooking for myself means taking what odds and ends I have leftover and getting creative with the flavours I can put together. This colourful bowl of goodness was a mix of salad, paprika roasted veggies including cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, onion and whole garlic cloves, fajita quorn strips, sticky white rice, sprouts, pepitas, a squeeze of lemon and that all important drizzle of hot sauce. The addition of pineapple wedges and touch of paprika on the veggies complimented the Mexican theme and really vamped up this dinner.
Once again oats prove to be the most economical of wholesome ingredients and provide endless possibilities with all the different cooking methods. I most often use rolled oats and choose to cook on the stovetop, however I baked this bowl of oatmeal in the oven to achieve a super creamy consistency. No need for fancy powders or seed mixes, simply take a cup of rolled oats, a cup of soy milk, a cup of water, mix together in a bowl and leave in the oven for 25 minutes or so. I stirred in grated apple half way through and left to stand for 10 minutes before topping with warmed berries and cinnamon. I’ve experimented a lot with methods for cooking oats and lavish toppings to decorate, but this basic recipe was perfect and just as worthy of a photo. I enjoyed my bowl sat in the garden soaking up the first few rays of Australian spring; sometimes its the simple pleasures that warm the soul.

I kept it very simple and the result was so delicious it was like eating desert for breakfast! My new obsession with rice milk really topped the dish off like the whipped cream to accompany a carrot cake. If I had gone to the supermarket and shopped for this recipe I probably would’ve over complicated it, but by just using what I had to hand, I discovered the perfect combination of ingredients – Sometimes less is more!
