Sydney Festival at Carriageworks

With distinctive nineteenth century industrial interior retained from its former use as a rail yard, Carriageworks in Redfern is the most influential, contemporary multi-arts centre of its kind in Australia. So during Sydney Festival with events being held throughout the city, artist Nick Cave put on an exhibition here alongside a pop up theatre and restaurant Cosecha. It seemed the perfect time to checkout this notorious arts space which is also home to the famous weekly Saturday farmers market and some of Sydney’s biggest club nights.

edit 1Meeting my friend after work, we browsed the beautiful exhibition before stopping off for a glass (or two) of wine. I was in awe of the use of space as the beautiful art on display was such a contrast juxtapose to the raw, cumbersome interiors of this ancient building.

Edit 4.jpgThe Crystal Cloudscape built from thousands of sparkling chandeliers was exquisite and the eye-catching hanging metallic mobiles twinkled majestically against the exposed brickwork. However these hold a deeper meaning as on closer inspection they contain shapes of a teardrop, bullet or gun to symbolise the polarising gun occupancy prevalent in American culture today.

edit 3We then spent the evening winding down over some delicious Spanish tapas and a few glasses of Pinot Gris. We were treated to a pear parmesan rocket salad and polenta chips courtesy of my lovely landlady who is the head chef at Cosecha and finished the night with a little cheese board.

Edit 6.jpgAs an arts and culture hub, this space at Carriageworks attracts a variety of eclectic people to create a buzzing, friendly atmosphere welcome to anyone and everyone. I certainly can’t think of a better way to spend my hump day evening!

New New: SHEIN and ASOS

With my Birthday just around the corner and the weather hotting up here in Sydney, it was time to order in some new pieces for my wardrobe. Using up a 20 pound gift card for ASOS, I shopped the sale and purchased 2 dresses and a ring – bargain! I then spent about 100 dollars on SheIn.com where I also found some excellent jewellery and accessories to change up my style.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne of my favourite pieces is the shell anklet which I had been looking for to wear day-to-day during summer. Also pictured here are the selection of rings, a gold choker, twisted detail earrings and scarf headband all from SheIn.com.

Not that I need yet another pair of sunnies, but I couldn’t resist these quirky cat eye tortoiseshell ones ideal for sunning on the beach.

This flamingo storage holder was also another great little find and has come in handy for keeping my jewellery organised. I may re-order more of these useful decrotive storage baskets for tidying away bits and bobs like makeup and hair clips.

On the search for a floral bikini to add to my collection, I chose this stunning rose print ruffle two piece with flattering ruched bottoms.

Sticking to muted tones, I bought a peppermint green oversized flannel shirt and white lace babydoll cami, both loose and airy for throwing on with smart trousers for work or with denim shorts on the weekend.

Contrary to my usual colour palette, I then went for a pink stripe ruffle mini dress which would be paired perfectly with my straw boat hat. Finally I picked up this tie-dye blue maxi dress from ASOS; a flattering fit with asymmetric cut hemline and completely backless, this may well be the birthday dress I’ve been looking for to take me from daytime on the beach, to partying the night away on Australia Day ❤

Eclectic Feels in Lavender Bay

‘Eclectic’: deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. For me this sums up the key to creating a space which is stylish yet timeless. Just like art, a home must source inspiration and draw upon elements from a mixture of places to bring together and emulate the personality and life of its owner.

edit 1So here I find myself in the home of an artist turned chef and all round creative who has refined this beautiful space into a home inspired by her life of travels. Every corner of the flat is tastefully put together and has a story behind it to be told, from the opulent mosaic bone china to the side stool found on a street corner!

Edit 8.jpgEdit 7.jpgA couple of weeks prior to my move, this original framed print of John Lenon was purchased and placed as the centrepiece above my bed. To compliment such a dynamic piece, my Auntie gifted me this incredible tribal necklace which I’ve placed in prime position on my chest of drawers.

edit 2edit 3Adding my own personal touches to the decor with my ballet shoes hanging off the mirror and boat hat placed side by side with the necklace, I wanted to reflect the eclectic theme which is echoed throughout the flat. I feel so inspired by my surroundings nestled here in the hidden timeless pocket of Lavender Bay, Sydney.

Packing Up Paddo

Having lived with family on and off over the past year in Paddington, it’s time to pack my bags (including copious amounts of shoes) and find my own digs in Sydney. Being so central to the city yet close to the beaches, Paddo has been a brilliant stomping ground for me as I’ve found my feet in a new city, not to mention the trendy bars, most highly rated restaurants and chic boutique stores that occupy hidden corners of this neighbourhood.

Edit 2.jpgOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASpending my weekends browsing the markets, trying another new coffee shop and meeting my friends for avro drinks in one of the quintessential pubs, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. However such an exclusive postcode comes at a price and an opportunity arose to live with a family friend in Lavender Bay. Given the idyllic location and beautiful apartment on offer, I decided to take the leap from central Sydney to just over the bridge…Edit 6.jpgNestled right by the harbour bridge over in North Sydney, Lavender Bay is a hidden gem with sweeping views over the city and only a short ride into the CBD. I can’t wait to explore what this exclusive part of town has to offer with its numerous harbourfront bars and restaurants as well as Wendy’s Secret Garden which is just on my doorstep. Whilst this will be an exciting adventure discovering a new area of the city, I do see myself living back in the bustling hood of Paddo in the future. In the meantime, I’ll still be back regularly to see family and visit my favourite shops and bars as I pass by on my way to the beaches during summer.

Majestic Mood

Music is most definitely a huge part of my everyday routine and always sets me in the right mood for the day. Whether it’s powering my walk as I brave the morning commute in Sydney, or setting a chilled atmosphere whilst kicking back for a few drinks with friends, I always like to have the tunes going. I’m currently creating my own Majestic playlist inspired by Majestic Casual Radio on Spotify. My vibe is definitely deep Indie with a mix of chilled dance music, so here’s some of my current favourites as we dive into Sydney summer and get those tunes pumping down the beach!

Oceans Crossed, Memories Made: Anniversary in Oz

Exactly one year ago today I made the leap across the pond and began my journey here in Australia. Coming with a loose plan to work in Sydney and see what opportunities came my way, gave me the freedom to take on new challenges and explore my potential to work in a variety of roles, from bartending and promoting to an assistant at one of Sydney’s biggest PR companies.

IMG_7986.JPGFollowing a summer of fun spending my days on the beach and partying the weekends away with new friends from all corners of the world, I realised that I needed to get my farmwork under my belt if I wanted to stay another year. Soon I found myself going from glamourous city job living in the homely hood of Paddington, to out in Aussie countryside where I was plunged into the winter farm life of the Southern Highlands (yes, Australia does get cold too!). Whilst it was a bumpy start, soon I found my feet with a fabulous group of friends and a proper Aussie boyfriend! I discovered the area is very much like the quaint English village I’m from and I enjoyed living the simple country life for four months.

Pic00024.jpgOctober rolled around and it was my Mum’s big 60th birthday which I flew back home to England for. It was amazing seeing all of my friends and family who are so proud of me and can see the happiness life in Oz has rewarded me with. However those three weeks went far too quickly and saying goodbye again was very emotional, as I knew this time I was in it for the long run.

Edit 48.jpgBack in Sydney I couldn’t wait to hit the ground running. I landed the role back in the PR company I was at previously and soon found a new flat in Sydney to move into in the new year. During the Christmas holidays I finally got some time off to enjoy with my boyfriend and we were spoilt by family and friends welcoming us to join celebrations down the coast.

Edit 18.jpgNow I begin 2019 with everything I could’ve ever dreamed of achieving in my first year in Oz; a fantastic job in PR, a beautiful flat overlooking the harbour bridge, lots of great new friends and my Aussie man by my side. Who knows what is around the corner for me this year, but I do know that I’ve already made lifelong friends who I’ve shared some incredible memories with and look forward to many more.

Byron Eats: Combi Acai

My motto when I reach a any new destination is first and foremost, find the best brekky in town by scanning the trending spots on Instagram or Pinterest. So being a beachside town known for its health food cafes feeding the bellies of those Aussie beach bums showcasing their washboard abs, I was keen to scope out Byron’s best answer to my Acai cravings.

combiArriving on NYE afternoon, everywhere was packed out and we were lucky to grab a table in the most happening place in town for a healthy lunch. Combi cafe was top of my list for getting the best all-day brekky with its extensive menu including a vast selection of Acai and superfood bowls, not to mention the cool bohemian interiors which eco simple Scandinavian style to create a relaxed, laid back atmosphere.

Edit 5.jpgI ordered the classic Acai Bowl blended with house made nut mylk topped with banana coins, apple, berries, coconut flakes and a hidden base of crunchy activated caramelized burkini bites, whilst my boyfriend enjoyed his bowl laden with cacao nibs and peanut butter (which I had to take a spoonful of!). Our bowls came in good time with friendly service too, something I could really appreciate as the staff were clearly working hard to meet the demands of a packed out bank holiday lunch rush.

Edit 6.jpgCoffee was on point too, served in stunning blue crockery to match the beachy theme of coconut shell bowls and food served on rustic wooden boards. With potted palms and living herbs on the kitchen bench to bring the outside air in, alongside a seventies inspired pastel colour pallette and exposed plumbing fixtures, the overall ambiance is contemporary and cool yet cosy and homely.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Founded upon the principle that eating well can be just as delicious and exciting, Combi uses only organic, locally sourced ingredients to offer a menu of enticing raw treats and eats which are nourishing for both the body and soul. If you’re stopping off in Byron Bay anytime soon, I would encourage you to visit Combi not only to sample the best in superfood, but to dine al fresco and soak up that salty sea air whilst rubbing shoulders with the eclectic mix of Byron locals.

Byron and Beyond: New Years Road Trip

When you think of the typical Aussie surfers paradise with an eclectic mix of locals from all corners of the world seeking sun, sea, arts, culture, music, food and a buzzing social scene all in one place, Byron is the number one destination. So with some time on our hands over the holidays and somewhere I had on my bucket list to visit, we decided to take a road trip up the north coast to spend New Years in the bohemian town of Byron and explore some hidden gems on our way back.

pic00002Packing up the Defender and our little boat complete with a nifty camping setup, we hit the road a day before NYE and covered some good distance on our first leg up the coast from Sydney. Making it all the way to Sawtell by dusk, we were about to get some groceries and park up for the night, when my boyfriend spotted an old friend who lives in town. He invited us to stay the night, so we brought in some cheeses, meats, dips, bread and wine to graze on as the boys had a catch up and reminisced on old times.

pic00001The next day was NYE so we got going in the early morning with the view of buying last minute tickets to Falls Festival. We didn’t reach Byron until gone 1pm, so instead we decided to make the most of our final day in 2018 and spend the evening in town soaking up the atmosphere. Following cocktails at the Beach Hotel, we found a perfect spot on the headland just out of central Byron to park up and camp for the night.

pic00003A quick freshen up and a few vinos sat on top the Defender and we were ready for our NYE in Byron Bay. We stumbled across a fab spot for dinner at Miss Margarita overlooking the beachfront as we sipped prosecco and devoured our Mexican feast of chipotle chicken nachos and fish burritos. The town was alive and so much going on, from jams on the beach to night markets where I bought a Snowflake of Obsidian gemstone anklet meant to balance the body, mind and spirit – just what I need for a fresh start in the new year! Following the countdown on Byron Beach, we danced the night away at a local pub The Great Northerner and ended celebrations with a stunning moonlit walk up the beach to where we were camping.

pic00004pic00006New Years day and our delicate heads were fixed with a dip in the lagoon and morning of mooching the boutique shops of Byron. Before leaving, we also visited The Farm with its popular cafe and restaurant on site run by the founders of hatted restaurant Three Blue Ducks in Sydney. Here we enjoyed a much needed coffee and spot of brunch overlooking the sunflower fields before another long leg on the road. It was a busy time of year with the holidays in full swing, so I would be keen to visit another time to experience the true free-spirited local vibes of hippie Byron Bay.

pic00008Pic00072.jpgEnding up back in Sawtell where we had initially scoped out a good spot to camp by the river, we launched the boat late afternoon and got fishing as the sun went down at golden hour. With a quiet river to ourselves, tunes playing in the background and a glass of vino in hand, it was the most blissful way to welcome in the first day of 2019. Our setup for the night was just perfect too, with a makeshift kitchen laid out on the grass and boat back on dry land set up with the bed ready to fall into after dinner. I made the most of what we had as shops had closed early on the bank holiday, even having to use tin foil for makeshift plates! I put together some bruschetta with cucumber, tomato and lemon for starters before steaming some broccoli and corn to accompany our little white fish from the days catch – modest yet so tasty.

pic00012pic00014After a morning dip, we ventured into the quaint old town of Bellingen to have a coffee in the trendy cafe/shop Hyde and later lunch at No 5 Church Street. I would highly recommend this hidden spot on a quiet side street for food in Bellingen with its quirky interiors and menu to suit all tastes. I opted for a delicious pumpkin feta salad and my boyfriend raved about the chicken burger and ‘best chips’ he’d ever had! Bellies full we visited the Promised Lands just out of town for an afternoon swim and more fishing. This is a truly stunning area of natural beauty with a fresh water stream running through the heart of the woodlands and large plunge pools for taking a dip.

Pic01297.jpgOur final night of cooking beneath the stars, we polished off our wine supply whilst discussing our hopes and plans for the year ahead. It was certainly a journey of prosperity and growth for me here in Oz and now I find myself diving head first into a second year here! I could never have dreamed what this adventure had in store for me and the happiness it would bring along with it, so I intend to go forward with an open mind and ready to embrace the opportunities 2019 has to offer…’Dare to go beyond your wildest dreams and your true potential will follow.’

Mollymook Magic

With a couple days spare before our New Years road trip up the coast, we found ourselves back in Mollymook to catch up with more friends. Having had a spontaneous Boxing Day evening out fuelled with one crate too many of VBs, we nursed our hangovers with brekky at Tallwood cafe. We both had the fruit bowl with a superfood nut seed mix and coffee to get us going for the day.

Edit 3.jpgAfter a quick dip in the ocean to reset our bodies, we visited my boyfriend’s auntie and uncle’s place where we could chill for a few hours in the cool air-conditioning. I also got to catch up on some journal writing which I hadn’t had time for over the Christmas period. It was the most idyllic setup as I sat overlooking the golf course and Mollymook beach.

edit 4edit 6That evening we were welcomed to stay the night and kindly invited to join a BBQ with yet more yummy offerings of seafood, steak and salads. I was in charge of serving the G&Ts which gave me a good head-start for our night out in the local town of Ulladulla.

edit 1edit 5 Joining our mate who is founder and producer of Mammals, we were off to see a Babe Rainbow gig at The Marlin. Another night on the VBs and some good tunes was a recipe for a fun filled evening of dancing around and having a good laugh. I thought Molly was just a quiet family seaside town, little did I know there is a buzzing young community scene in and around quaint Magical Mollymook!

Boxing Day on the Shoalhaven River

My typical Boxing Day usually consists of a long winter walk followed by a lazy pub lunch back home in England, however here in Oz I experienced the very opposite of days. Starting bright and early at 7am, me and my boyfriend packed the boat and hopped in the defender to spend the morning cruising on the Shoalhaven river in Nowra.

Edit 1.jpgWe met with some family friends who also own a handsome ‘Malibu’ boat and got going on the water by 8:30am. It was a beautiful summer day with a light breeze to cool the air. With the tunes pumping and sun glistening on the water, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my morning.

edit 2It was a great opportunity to test run my boyfriend’s new stunning little boat which he got for a bargain on Gumtree recently. We made a stop at a little beach where we could pull the boat up and jump off a cliff before having a swim in the gorgeous clear water. I even got to try my hand at waterskiing for the first time which is a lot harder than it looks! My boyfriend then showed me how its done as he showed off his stylish moves on the wakeboard.

Edit 7.jpgedit 5Following our morning on the water, we hit the beach and cracked open the only Aussie drink necessary for Boxing Day, Victoria Bitter beers! It was a dreamy afternoon laying on the beach with friends sipping our VBs, feeling like we had truly seized the day with our morning of fun on the river and the entire afternoon and evening still ahead of us to enjoy…’Carpe Diem!’
